Default FLT Level 4?

How much power is the FLT Level 4 tranny supposed to be able to handle over long periods of time? I don't see that it says on their website anywhere and I am thinking about getting one for my TA. There is a $600 increase to the level 5, so unless the level 4 won't support my goals for the future then I'm going to just go with that one. For right now I am just a bolt-ons car. next will be a medium sized cam, and then maybe heads after a long while. I would like to end up with at least 400-450rwhp. Maybe more some day after I graduate from Purdue. What do you think, should I just go with the Level 4, or pay an extra $600 for the level 5?

Thanks

Full bolt-on and cam right now with heads coming later. Level 4 is what Vince recommended to me. Level 5 is more for nitrous, FI cars I believe. You're gonna love it. Shifts like a dream! IMO, you can't get better than a FLT unit period.

Sounds good to me . It's kinda funny, I was going through the things i want to do to my car, and then i saw yours. It's pretty similar. I want to end up going with a TR228, instead of 30 like yours, I'm going to get a 12-bolt with 3.73's, rather than your 9" with 3.90's you're getting, I want a PT4000 now, almost like your 4400, and I want a FLT level 4 now too. lol. Then some sticky tires and a tune and off I go .

I have another question now though too... not related to the topic title though... haha. I thought the PT series converters locked up up top and that's what really set them apart from the SS series, but in your video and a couple others I've seen, along with the talk of shift extensions makes me think they don't actually lock up. What's the big difference between them then? How much of a shift extension would I gain with the PT4000 would you say over mine now (I drop to about 4900 from the stock 6k)?

Thanks for all the help

Actually, I'm up in the air about which rear to get right now. It's either a Strange 12-bolt with 3.90's or a Midwest Chassis fabbed 9" with 3.89. Still trying to decide. As for the converter, I've never heard of anyone locking it at the track although maybe some do. They just pull better on the top end because of how loose they are. Even with a 2.5 STR, it pulls so much harder than my old SS4000 did with a 2.6 STR. Shift extension is ~5800 shifting at 6500. You'll love the PT converter. I've had it in for 1000 miles now and I still can't get enough of those highway pulls.

Hmm... Well that interesting. I wonder what kind of power they would put to the wheels compared to an SS converter? I just got mine dynoed a few months ago just after I had put my SS3600 in and was actually pretty disappointed. After everything I had done, and then putting the converter in there, all I had was 314rwhp unlocked. Very disappointing. lol. If I went with the PT series I think I might want to change mufflers too.... The flowmaster 10-series mufflers I have on duals are getting kinda loud with it only taking 2000-2500 to move around right now.... lol

The PT's are just as efficient if not more so. But then again, A4's aren't made for the dyno. As you sit, I'd bet you'd run at least 12.4's. And yes, with a cam and a big converter your exhaust will be stupid loud. I live with it, but I see myself changing exhaust in the future.

I'm thinking possibly Borla XR-1s for later on once I do some more stuff to it (cam, bigger stall) since they are so quiet compared to the single chambers I have in there now. I think they might be too big to fit where mine are now though...

Yeah I was wondering about those too. The videos I listened to on LS1sounds all made them sound like they had a funny sound to them though. I know I like the magnaflow catback sound a lot though. Just too much rasp.

I am running about 520 RWHP here and I talked to FLP when I was going to go with a turbo setup and I guess there are many cars running high 600's thru 700 RWHP that are running level 4's....my tranny has never missed a beat and I beat on it....

Sorry for the late reply here. We do not market RWHP #'s because these transmissions fit so many different applications. Also we feel that a personal conversation is best to ensure that you receive the proper transmission for your needs. Obviously there is a difference between a 3200lb+ car and a 5-6000lb truck. I like happy customers and would rather pass on a sale if the situation is not right for both parties. I'm sure you understand. As far as the trans we have level 4 units that have been living very well in 600+ rwhp cars. With your current mods I feel that a level 4 is the trans for you. Also if ever needed, you can have your unit freshened up and upgraded. This is the a service that we provide to anyone that has one of Chucks or my units. Even if you did not buy it from FLT. I have had customers from previous shops follow me here to take advantage of this same offer as well as Chuck. Kinda tells you something right there that we will always be there for you. Give us a call when you are ready and thank you for your time. Vince
