Default converter and SES code 1870

I had a used Super Yank 3500 converter installed a few weeks ago and on the 2 hour drive home I randomly got an SES light. I reset the PCM when I got home and the light stayed off for a few days. When I was driving on the highway again the light showed back up. This was when driving at ~70mph for a short while. I could tell that the RPMs would be sitting around 2400 and then all of a sudden jump up about 200 or so to about 2600 and then go back down...a minute or two later it would do the same thing. So anyways, I got the code scanned and it is a code 1870, trans failure/slip. Any ideas on how to fix this problem? Is it just because of the converter and something I should just live with, or is it pertinent to get it fixed?

Hey Midnight, Your code 1870 could be one of several things. Could be a pressure, electrical, or mechanical problem. I normally see this on older used or abused trannies, everytime that code pops up the converter is slipping, it will eventually overheat and self distruct. Some of the after market kits address this code, sometimes can be corrected with a kit. Also the clutch compound has to be combatable with the lock up system being used. However I suspect the used converter, only because there is no mention of ever having this code before the install.

It is your converter... I am willing to bet if you put your stock converter back in or put in a Vig, your problem will go away... I had the exact same problem and went round and round with line pressure and everything else. I got fed up and swapped the converter and all the problems went away. It has been over a year and no issues.

Converter probably came out of an abused trans. I've known of people who have 40K+ miles on SY3500 'verters. They are very reliabile as long as you get them new or know the history. If that converter was in a trans that blew up and it wasn't tore down and properly cleaned then it's just pumping crap into your trans now...

Talked to Mike at Yank, told me it could be my HPP3.... so I set everything back to stock except shift firmess to 25%. Reset the PCM, and the light has stayed off. Driven it probably 300 miles this weekend, highway and around town. So, who knows.

If I don't hit a 12.3 at the track this weekend I'm gonna go with a vig3200 or vig3600 anyway <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" /> *new* not used, i might add, lol

btw, this converter had 1k miles on it is all, previous owner had NO problems with it, and is an active poster with a good rep over at LS1.com

First, you get the award for being able to get a hold of Mike. Second, he will blame it on everything except for his converter. Third, I bet it happens again...

Post Just my .02

I had the same problem with my brand new converter. Turns out the car picks up misfires and throws the P1870 code with my HPP3, I uninstalled it and the problem went away. Some of the folks will tell you that you can just up the # of misfire counts with LS1-Edit (that the car is picking up on phantom misfires, which I was getting), but I haven't gotten LS1-Edit yet to try it.
