my trans is down right now,
and i dont have the $$$ to get a stage four
titanium 4L60E w/ the optional flux capacitor,
so i will have to do a simple rebuild w/ necessary upgrade parts.
the trans guy said my clutch went bad,
so i assume i should get upgraded the clutch(es)
the companies use raybestos blue plate, so ill need that?
what else do i need?
on another post i read something about billet accumulators and "the beast" reaction shell.. what would i need those for? i dont wanna rebuild every few months

Does he have a set up of his own or is he most familiar with just stock rebuilds.
Here in Northern Mich. we see allot of low/rev planetary failures in plow trucks. A 5-pinion carrier with a wide low roller clutch is the ticket. Might be a bit over kill for a low-geared street car, but maybe not for you with your Police Interceptor gears. ... The 3-4 clutch set up is a debate in itself. More clutches hold more torque with less but increase parasitic load. Basically if it's set too tight it'll feel awesome but fail early. ... The band; upgrade to a wider and HD anchor area. ... Clutch material; just like your wheel brakes! the softer **** grabs good with low apply pressure but wears. The harder compound wears good but needs allot of apply pressure and glazes easily. ... "The Beast Shell" business; if your slamming your shifts so hard that the stock impute drum cracks, then you need this. Shift kit: several different setups depending on trans intended use and internal component setup.
So you see building a trans to last is mostly component selection and setup by the person building the trans. I've been hanging here regularly a few months now and have yet to see any real technical discussions on good/bad setups.
TTT for you ... Ron

I'd call TCI and tell 'em you want all the good stuff for a performance 4L60-E build. I'd get their shift kit while I was at it.
The most important thing is that you go with 9 clutches on the 3-4 pack instead of 6. Alto offers this. I think that the Raybestos blues may be offered with 9 now too (so I read.) Either or will be great just so long as you use 9.
As Ron mentioned, setup is important. Those clutches need to have the right clearance to work well and last long.

If you want an overview of the parts you can upgrade your tranny with, take a look in the new GMHTP. Century Transmissions mentioned a lot of upgradeable parts in an article in there.

these guys that are running low 11's,
dont they have a stock trans
w/ a high stall
and maybe a shift kit?
its just a daily driver
i may just go w/ a standard rebuild
and better clutches
no beast reaction shell for me
but i will definately take a look at that GMHTP!
thanks guys

Huh...stock v6 with some high dollar tranny upgrade mods. No flame here, but how are you driving the car? I would think stock replacement parts would be sufficent, or the 4l65-E replacement parts would be fine, and a tranny cooler if you are manually shifting. Also try a shift kit.

stock v6 with high dollar tranny upgrade mods?
who?
well
i have the transcooler and shift kit
and i hope its going to be enough
my dad decided to pay for the rebuild
as long as i dont add any more 'upgrades'
which is fine by me, the TC and shiftkit is already in.
he thinks its needs the rebuild because i screwed something up when i installed the TC or shitkit.
btw, HardBlu,
are you saying if i have a transcooler,
it is okay to manually shift?
that would be nice.

My bad...I saw 3400 and thought you had a v6... Let me clear something, a shift kit will help with the shift firmess, which in turn will help your clutches which will extend the life of the tranny, and the cooler will keep the heat at a minimum and will also extend the life of the tranny.
I would leave the shifting to the A4.
Hows the TC?
Look into the 4L65-E parts and compare prices before you buy a high dollar replacement, unless you get a good deal..

yeah, i learned the hard way to leave the shifting to the trans
and it is cheaper to replace brake pads then rebuild the trans, so dont downshift to slow down like the M6ers
like the body damage,
its a learning experience.. =(

My 4L60E shift hard and it doesn't even have a shift kit. It's just got bad *** parts and ton of pressure. Gotta love the billet pump!

I had mine rebuilt last month. I got the extras put in, billet pump, extra cluthes, and other goodies, and 1-2 shift is hard! I had to tune it down a bit. No PCM adjustments, strickly internal. The 3-4 extra clutches should help too.
The TC got locked several times during a dyno tune and broke, the little pieces went thru the tranny. TC was replaced "free" by the mfg, soon to install. Couldn't expect the TC mfg repair the tranny since they didn't perform the dyno tune.
