Default Came into $2500. What tranny to get?

Ok guys I know people post these questions all the time and I always read them and help out when I can but now its my turn. I have come into $2500 that I want to put into a new trans for my car. It is currently as you see it in my signature. The stock 4L60E is working fine right now it is the limiting factor in me making more power and going faster. I want to go ahead and upgrade it before I break the stock one. My question is what should I go with?

My plan for this car is to hopefully make a bit over 400 on motor and then hit it with a 125-150 shot of spray and make 550 or so on the juice. I want the car to go mid 10's on spray and low 11's on motor. This car does see the track probably 20-30 passes a year. Do you guys think a well built 4L60E from one of our awesome sponsors on here will be good or while I am spending the money should I spend a little more and go with a 4L80E?

Also I am torn about the torque converter. I currently run a Yank SS3600 but I don't know if I should stick with that converter or run a new one made by whoever I get the tranny from? I think I might want a little looser converter that will get out of the hole a little quicker but once I get a cam and spray on the car I am thinking that the SS3600 will probably be much better. I am just looking for advice or suggestions or testimonials about what some of you other guys have done and what you have liked and didn't like. Thanks in advance!!

Glad you asked! I have no doubt that a well build 4L60E is the correct answer here. We have no problem taking them into the power level you are looking to run! A 4L80E conversion is a significant undertaking that is significantly more expensive if the swap is done correctly the 1st time.

I would recommend staying with the 3,600 stall converter for the time being. The reason is it will change when you begin to put more power into it, it will most likely stall a bit higher. Not much mind you... but you don't want to go too high initially if you are planning to run that much nitrous down the road.

Feel free to give me a call to discuss it in detail!

The 4L60E built by any of the sponsors here will hold up in that range well. A 4l80e would likely be more than your budget allows and is not needed at your power level.
Please feel free to look over what we have to offer and to ask any questions here or by phone,

I also have another question about the torque converter. The SS3600 has only been in my car since March of this year. When I get a new trans and if I decided to stick with the SS3600 can I just put it right on the new trans or do I need to send it back to Yank and have it freshened up? Its only been in my car for 4 months. It has only seen two track visits and less than 5k miles. What do you guys think?

well everyone will have different views on this, Personally if the trans you have now is in good shape and the fluid is clean I would flush it and use it but then thats just me. 4 months isn't very long and if all is clean in the trans I would see no point in it, But then again just my opinion

I was thinking the same thing. Like I said the stocker I have now shifts great and I have no reason to think that there would be any metal shavings or anything the system right now. You said you would flush it and use it so how do you recommend flushing the converter in a situation like this?

I also went the th400 route but I have very little street driven miles. If gas prices are an issue then you will definately want overdrive. I have the reverse valvebody and transbrake. First time out I ran a best of a 10.9 with a 1.6x' and had a best 60' of 1.45. I still have a lot left in this setup to get the times down but the th400 held up great and I know it will for a long time.

some shops can do that for you but like I said if its all is clean just drain it and you should be good to go.

Buy a rear end if the tranny isn't in need of rebuilding.
