a4...... fun times my transmission grenaded on me today.
I was going to work, getting on the interstate uphill and decided to give it a lil gas.... yeah....................
tires hooked, car didnt move.
2nd gear went out along with the lock-up on 4th gear.
i knew it was coming to this, 2nd gear has been acting up on me for a while, but i was hoping to limp it along before it came to this.
it sucks...
and adding to the fun. with all the stop signs on base, I had to gun it up to 30 mph before the car would shift to 3rd so i looked like a jackass who couldnt drive.

got done talking with my trans guy, gettin one built.
here's what he had to say:
With 185k were gonna need to start with a sonnax reconditioning kit. The valve body and pump are gonna be worn out. This kit will bring them back to OE or better specs. Then on top of that we can go with the Transgo HD2 kit. Ill go with High energy alto frictions through out. Corvette servo, Carbonite 2-4 band, with heavy duty lugs. There are a couple of little tricks that i do with the 4l60e, that you wont notice but your transmission will thank me. For the upgraded units i use a different 3-4 clutch stack up. Pinless/leakless accumulator pistons. Complete bushing kit, every bushing is replaced. If the pump halfs are worn out then i resurface both sides flat.

How much is he charging for a rebuild? If it's $1,500 - $2,000 you'd probably be better off getting a 4L60E from a sponsor. I would NEVER buy a rebuilt 4L60E from a guy that didn't specialize specifically in this transmission. You can't just throw in better parts and expect them to work. It's ALL in the tricks - drilling holes and knowing exactly what parts mix with other parts. I've seen way too many horror stories of people going to the local guy's generic trans shop and getting a "performance build" that's nothing more than a shift kit, stronger clutches and a "corvette servo" that comes stock to begin with

How much is he charging for a rebuild? If it's $1,500 - $2,000 you'd probably be better off getting a 4L60E from a sponsor. I would NEVER buy a rebuilt 4L60E from a guy that didn't specialize specifically in this transmission. You can't just throw in better parts and expect them to work. It's ALL in the tricks - drilling holes and knowing exactly what parts mix with other parts. he's basically building the whole thing with new stuff all around. I swung by his shop and we walked thru everything. ive got a whole list of stuff he's going to be doing. with the stall converter and labor its going to run around 2100. and i appreciate your concern, but i know this guys work, he's been building transmissions for a while and does a lot of great work for our local car club.

I hope my new one lasts this time. I just couldn't do another local job. Not even with a referral from you. Frank is great. Who the hell else can you bug at 2am on a thursday? That's right, Performabuilt's on YahooIM right now. LOL. He must **** transmission fluid.
