That's CS for California Special. Honestly does anyone really give a rats *** about "special editions" that are nothing more than "rare" and "limited" paint jobs, decals, interior trims and a numbered plaques? This was a typical GM thing to do back in the day. Yah let's charge these idiots a few extra grand in exchange for a yellow paint job on what will be the last of the Firebirds, or checkered flag stripes on what will be the last of the Camaros.
Ford pulled this on the SN95 with the Bullitt edition that added like 5hp on top of a base GTs 260hp rating but at least upped the ante with the Mach 1 give the sub Cobra Mustang an even 300 horses. My thinking is that yes, while the original CS was nothing more than an average joe Mustang with Shelby styling cues, it wouldn't have killed Ford to add another 25-35hp with 175 ponies already seperating the S-197 GT and the GT500. I also would have liked the "Shelby style" tailights from the original S-197 Mustang Concept. I've always felt that those lights looked better than the plebian production units.
There are still rumors that Ford will build a 390ish hp Mustang to go toe to toe with a potentially 400hp Z28 if and when it debuts. If you ask me they should use the Boss 290 motor (290 for 290 kw which translates to 389hp) from down under which is a naturally aspirated 5.4L iron block V8 for their mid level Mustang. For now we'll have to settle for the GT/CS which packs a new (albeit better looking) front end, a black rear deck spoiler, a hood scoop which for all I know is probably not functional a la SN95 GTs, a stripe down the side and some interior trim bits. Whoopy freakin doo.
While I do like the additional styling cues I think they should be no cost options on a base GT. Ponying up (no pun intended) an extra $1,900 for some cosmetic add-ons doesn't exactly seem like a great deal to me.

Hopefully it will be limited just to California. A bunch of J.C. Whitney-inspired scoops and lame rear wing. I see Ford is still pimping the Bullit-style wheels. They are handsome, but should have went out with the SN95. It looks like Ford is just coasting now that there is virtually no competition for the Mustang, too bad. It would have been nice to see a Mach 1 style (Boss 330 according to MT) mid level performance model come out since the Shelby is pretty high up there in performance and price.
