Z06 Puts Tail Between Its Legs... Or Does It? Dodge Unleashes 8.4L 600hp Viper SRT-10

Overkill much? Ok honestly as much as the idea of a 600hp Viper with a larger 8.4L motor gets my attention what this car could've used is some weight reduction and a bit of class. Yah sure the Viper has always been a modern day 427 Cobra, but the interior and ergonomics of this thing is just pure ****. Plus there comes a point where putting 600hp to the ground becomes more of a chore than pure driving excitement. I don't see Dodge claiming that this thing will pimp slap a Z06 and quite frankly I'm wondering if it will. Somehow I see this thing potentially turning slightly quicker times than a Z06 but magazines bitching about how hard it is to keep a handle on it. At 3400 lbs. the Viper is no featherweight so I would have preferred if Dodge could have found a way to suck some 200-400 lbs. out of this thing somehow someway. And while I'm not asking for heated seats, a slightly more pleasing interior wouldn't have killed them. Hell even GM upped the ante with the interior of the C6.
The Viper has always been about excess but for me an 8.4L V10 cranking out 600hp is bordering on insane. As much as I love the idea of a Super Viper I would have loved it if Dodge built a 3000 lbs. car with 550hp instead. A street legal Comp Coupe if you will. Unfortunately it looks like someone at AMG opened their fat mouth to someone over at SRT. Mercedes AMG products are another example of obnoxious amounts of excess, especially with their 65 AMG bi-turbo V12 models that make so much torque they have to use the old 5 speed automatic because the 7G-Tronic 7 speed cant cope with the motor.
I've always loved how the Viper has been about excess and about nothing but the drive but I think this may be a step too far or at least a step in the wrong direction. I'm anxious to see what kind of times this thing can pull. I hope for the sake of Dodge it's actually able to put the power down and rip off faster times than the 8.3L cars. In the end this thing is still one sexy beast though. And I am glad they've opted not to include some form of traction or stability control as if to say "**** off n00b" to the poseurs. I guess in the end so long as its got an 8.0L+ V10 under its hood... Viper FTW.

I posted this information a few threads below but I didn't have all of the pictures you have. Personally I think it will be a badass viper, but like you mentioned hopefully it will be possible to transfer all 600hp to the ground instead of just melting the tires into a liquid.

I thought this model year was supposed to be a complete redesign? Well at least they made it a coupe this time and not a roadster.
Yeah, 600hp is still not enough.

viper spin too much as it is, i can't imagine how they plan on controlling 600 HP. it is true, vipers have always been kind of basic, but if you're going to blow THAT much on a car, i would expect a few luxuries. corvette will always beat them out for that.

I'd happily take a new ZO6 over that thing.

Viper still has the bling factor though, you do see a lot of vettes on the road and the average person can't tell the difference between a C6 Zo6 and a C6 but everybody knows the viper because its unmistakable and has that "bling." I agree with you guys, they really should have tried to lose some of that weight if they want to stay in the ring with super cars

Correct, allot of technology changes. dual throttle bodies, exhauast has been changed, no more x-pipe and side pipes (basically, no more oven in the car)
Motortrend did a great write up on it and so nice pics of the engine bay.
Honestly, the car looks fantastic.

Everytime chevy catches up, dodge up the ante. It's been that way for over 10 years. Dodge will just release a special version also to compare. I like those horsepower wars.

People always bitch about the interior of the Viper, but for gods sake, it's not a ******* Camry. It's a race car that just so happens to be street legal. I got to drive one around and the ergonomics were almost perfect for me. Being 6'2" with 36inch arms, not a lot of cars fit me like a glove, but the Viper did. The pedals were the perfect length away, the shifter sat right at palms reach of an outstretched arm. And the seat was absolutely BOLSTERED. I was very VERY happy driving it around for about an hour, despite the burn on my leg . Driving a car like that is something everyone needs to do in their lifetime...

I think dodge needs to find a way to milk more than 600 ponies froma 8.4L other than just upping the displacment. at this point there is a replacement for displacement and its called a twin turbo. dont get me wrong 600hp is nice but the viper needs more. However I do love the simplicity of the car
