Default Need tires: Recommendations

Welp, I'm definitely going with 275/40/18, and 245/45/18 for the front.

I do want to lower the car with H&R and MM spacers in the near future.

Looking for recommendations.

I drive the car 25k a year, and have H/C 432 HP.

I drive in the rain, (not really the snow)

I drive the car pretty spirited, and it will not be just a leisurely driven car.

I was looking at the Continental Contisports

Any other recommendations?

I'm running the Continental DW on our V and G8 GXP. Both are daily drivers. The Contis handle nearly as well as the PS2's the V came with and haven't been breaking loose on straight line rolling punches as easily as the PS2's did. The tires are much better than the GY RSA's that came on the G8, but that isn't saying much. They're also asymmetrical so you can easily rotate from side to side also.

It would be helpful to know what tires you're running now and what you like or don't like about them.

I, too, am running the Continental DWs, on both my CTS-V and my Subaru. I think they're fantastic tires - quiet, amazing grip, great wet or dry, and the price is very competitive.

Edit: Looks like Tire Rack doesn't offer the DW in a 275/40. Strange, since they offer the all-season version (DWS) in that size. Based on Tire Rack's testing, looks like the best options that fit those 2 sizes would be the Bridgestone RE760 or the BFG Comp-2. Looking at Discount Tire Direct, I would also look at the Falken FK452 or 453. I had 452s on both of my cars and was very happy with them; I assume the 453s are even better (but they're also quite a bit more expensive since they're Falken's latest and greatest tire).

Any reason why the Hankook Ventus V12 hasn't been mentioned? Same performance characteristics as the DW, a little heavier, but cheaper and doesn't share the hydroplaning problem that make the DW dangerous at 50% tread life and below.

In general, please note that Tire Rack charges shipping ($50+) but has low advertised prices. Discount Tire Direct doesn't charge shipping and has an easy price match system. Advise taking your TR prices to DTD to get the best possible total price.

BFG KDW2's all the way. Little noisy but handle well in the dry and seem to last a while, I've got 10K and some auto X on mine and they still have over 50% left. Don't do as well in the rain, but I have no issues and I drive around with my stability and traction control off because I have a wheel speed sensor that is tempermental. It rains a lot in Florida too.

The KDW 2 tires, which I just replaced, are heavy, expensive, and extremely loud. High rolling resistance. My set lasted me 17,000 miles with the traction control on. Solid wet performance...I had no problem weaving around corners at 75 mph in a downpour. It's just an old design. Wouldn't buy again because newer designs are an improvement in all areas.

I'm a big fan of BFG tires, but I have to recommend the Sumitomo HTR Z III. It has the same speed, treadwear, traction, and temperature ratings as the G-Force KDW 2, but costs much less. I put them on my car and have no complaints. The ride is smooth and quiet, and the traction is great in dry or wet conditions.

Does anyone know of any good tires out there that aren't directional? Would be easier to rotate and prolong life that way...

2nd set of BFG KDW2's here. Since I had to buy new ones in 19's. Love em. Not sure if Fuzzy has bad wheel bearings, or what cuz mine aren't loud at all. They grip like crazy, and are great dry, and the few times I got caught in the rain they were great.

5-6 dB reduction in cabin noise below 40 mph going from 245/45-18" KDWs on the stock wheels to the staggered Ventus V12 setup on my Forgestar F14s. Feels like I added 40 pounds of sound insulation between all four wheel wells.

Don't get me wrong: there's nothing wrong with the KDW 2 other than the noise and the fact that they've been surpassed by newer designs. That tread pattern looks awesome.

I drive about the same miles per year and switch between conti dw for 9 months and performance snow tires for 3 months. The conti dw are great tires for the money. If I was to use one tire all year it would be the conti dws based on exp with dw and others.

Conti dw discontinued 275/40's so all of this discussion is probably not real helpful unless you have some sitting around already. I would stick with conti dw imo and run 265/40, 275/35, or 255/40 all around on stock wheels or try 285/35 rear with 255/40 front if you have td wheels. I have an extra set of 275/40 going to try all 4 corners 275/40 on td wheels when my front 245's are done until the rears wear out.

I have crappy Nangkang tires that came on the car, and with 5/32nds left they break loose everywhere, and never really handled well

I just got a set of 255 40 dunlop sport maxx gts. I was considering a 255 40, and these were 60% off on TR.. They delivered Monday. Im afraid they look too small for my taste. It would probably help to see one mounted but I don't think that would sway me. I'm also concerned about them sticking out too much. I could live with them if I lowered another inch but that would be too low on our crap roads..

I think I might return them and get the sumitomo htr z III that I had originally decided on. The sumi has a stiffer sidewall than the hankook ventus v12. They are both great budget tires who share developmental resources with other high end companies (hankook/michelin and sumi/dunlop I think)

I might see if the local firestone will match tireracks price on the bridgestone re760 sport..those are a very competent tire for the price.

You guys don't think the conti dw looks taller than average? Seems ballooney to me. I agree that it's probably one of the the best all around tires for the price though..It would probably look good on stock height, just seems fat on a lowered car..

I wish I could convince myself to spend the cash on something like the pilot super sports...I've not seen one negative review on them and they come with a 30k warranty.

The star spec is a good looking high end tire and I like the falken rt615 as well..

I recommend the Michelin Pilot Super Sports.
They are very nice, light, grippy, and quiet tires.
Check out the reviews and performance specs on them, they beat out all other tires mentioned in this thread and have a 30k mile warranty to boot.
Only downside is that they don't offer a 275/40.
