Default looking at a ctsv with 2nd gear grind.

So I'm looking at a 2004 cts-v with 104k it has a high rpm 2nd gear grind.. he's asking 12 which is high for needing trans work. It has k&n intake and magna flow exhaust. Anyone experienced a gring like that. He said a shop quoted him 500 but I fond that hard to believe since I know 2 trans rebuilders and neither one will give an estimate like that because they never know if its input shaft bearing the cup a synchro or a fork problem.. car is decent few scratches on bumper. What do you think its worth.

I think that's reasonable. I've had mine repaired several times. I pulled the trans and bought parts, he did all the labor for 200. It's most likely just the syncro or blocker rings or both. Both are cheap parts. I've replaced both.

Give him 10 (or less) and then call east coast corvettes or whatever the place is that converts t56's to tr6060's and never worry about your trans again. 500 to fix a transmission is a pipe dream, it's never just one thing with them. That one thing just came apart and destroyed everything else in there, and then you go up in a ball of smoke doing 80 on the interstate and cover your car in trans fluid......on a related note never set foot in an aamco, made that mistake a long long time ago with another car.

Wouldn't even call it lowballing, trans issues can get expensive fast this is your insurance if you do need to start from scratch on the trans.

The 56 is pretty robust and I have torn my up pretty good with the Maggie and my aggressive driving and the damage has always been pretty well contained. If you take it to a reputable shop, they should be able to get it on the road for a reasonable cost. Of course, if they pull it, the price will probably go up substantialtaly. If you take it to some random shop out of the yellow pages, it would probably cost 1500 or more.

Definelty shop around on the trans shops. No two are created equal.

I don't really see that as lowballing either. The car books only 12100 in good condition.

TR6060 isn't a racing trans, its what the new V's, and camaros have it is smooth as butter to drive rather than the hammer operated t56 we have, which by all means will take a lot of abuse.

I'm used to a notchy trans. Don't know if you ever drove a 350z. If you did then you know what I'm talking about. 3600 really isn't that bad at all to get a totally reworked trans. I'd have to get it and see how notchy the trans is. If I can deal with it I'll get this one fixed if it blows then if I get it for 10 I have no problem putting that trans in.

I'm an base certified technition I could very easily do it myself but being I specialize in imports when I pull it I'll prolly take it to my buddy's shop who only does trans and 90% american for 40 years.

wow that price is crazy. The V's around here are in the $16-18k range. Nice ones are still in the $19-22k.
