I just found this, and figured I'd share in case anyone wanted to give it a shot. I'm prolly gonna do it at work tomorrow and see. Nothing to be harmed, and easily undoable. With the crazy shift linkage we have, it prolly ought to have been done from the factory.

The detent keeps the shifter taut and returns it to the neutral position.. Adding washers will just make the shifts feel looser...that's what you want?
I actually wanted to make my shifts tighter and replacing this detent is one thing I didn't do...I wasn't sure how much stronger the spring would be in the new one vs old so I left it alone as it costs 50-75 dollars for a new one.
Btw that bolt is a butch to get out without lowering the trans a bit or removing the linkage (which I can do now by feel alone)..it's way up on the side. Gear wrench fo shizz

Damn, I clicked on that link above and those guys are dumber than those idiots of at camaro5.com.
PROBABLY.
I did some research and a regular washer with a 3/4" hole in the middle would need a slight enlargement to work.
This modification releases just enough tension on the detent to allow easier shifting and not enough for the shifter to start popping out of gear.
I would find a FASTENAL and mic the bolt and then get an assortment of metal or nylon washer that came in different thicknesses and start small and work up......
Vette guys are doing it with no side effects.

It modifies the pressure on the shift rails. Most people like it and very few see no difference.
Also there are quite a few threads on here about it.

I guess I should've figured there's been threads about it. I just got done trying it. I tried 2, then 1, then removed it. It took about 15 minutes total. I've for an rpm built trans, so they may have modified this before, I don't know. It made shifts easier, but put about 2" of slack in the gear shift in the neutral position, as compared to about 1/4" without it. I couldn't handle that myself. It was worth a try.

I swapped a viper t-56 into my notchback stang, and did this mod before i put the trans in. I never drove with the trans before doing the mod so i cant give before and after, but its still very crisp shifts and doesnt seem to have any negative effects.

The Vette guys started that mod... I think they called it the anti-venom mod since back in the day so many were getting stomped on by Terminators. I did it to my 03 Cobra. The T56 in my Cobra shifted nothing like the one in my V. As you would expect from a car that is setup differently with a T56 built to different specs. It was very much worth the trouble for that car, they have a tendency to be difficult to quickly grab 3rd in. I wouldn't do it to the V, it's pathetic shifter is easy enough to throw around.
