Default Seal between the driveshaft and transmission

Was under the car changing oil, noticed tranny fluid all over the resonator. Appears to be coming from where the driveshaft enters the transmission. Anyone have a specific name for this seal or part number? Is it the rear main seal? Also how much of a bitch would it be to change? Doesn't look too bad.

Should be really easy to replace. Drain the ATF, pull the drive shaft, pull the seal, set the new seal, replace the drive shaft and ATF, done.

No need to drain the fluid to replace the output shaft seal.

Thanks for the link.

And if I don't drain the fluid, won't it spill out of there? The car will be with the front end lifted up.

If the front end only is lifted up then some ATF will drain (not sure how much) once you pull the shaft. I had the car in the air (rear slightly higher) and a just had a few drips when I replaced my DS. I say get it up as level as possible.

Yea drain it for sure. It can only help to put fresh fluid in it.

It just goes into place. No need to remove tail housing.

Make sure you use green loctite on the driveshalf bolts.

Green? I thought they only had blue for hand tightening. And red for a stronger hold.

And thanks for the info. Me and surprises don't get along.

Green loctite prevents vibration loosening.
You can use blue or red.

Make sure you mark where your driveshaft is before you remove it!

Got the exhaust out, got the drive shaft unbolted. Wasn't expecting to find a 30mm nut holding the trianglular piece (that the driveshaft bolts onto) to the transmission. Pep boys, homedepot and lowes don't stock a 30mm deep socket.

The seal I need to replace is right freakin there!!!

Also, look into getting a Trans Mount replacement. Yours looks a bit flat.

If you have an autozone around you they rent a bunch of special tools including sockets so you get to use it for free. I do it all the time.
