Default V1 5 lug swap [complete]

because the 6x115 bolt pattern is terrible for finding aftermarket wheels except for a few select models that have been made specifically for us, i'm following through with the 5 lug swap to get out of that mess. i also wanted to do brakes all around the car so it only makes sense to do the hubs at the same time and get into a more readily available bolt pattern for wheels.

there are two main areas where things need to be 'modified' from everything i've read and learned from other guys that've done it...

1) the hub bore on the vette/V1 is 70.3mm and all the available camaro/V2 rotors are 66.9mm hub bored so the rotors will need to be opened up. luckily i've got access to a machine shop so this is an easy fix for me. even those without access to one this should be pretty cheap anyway.

2) the rear rotors conflict with the dust shield which can be trimmed to work with the new rotors.

3) the ebrake won't work with the new rotors unless adjusted appropriately.

parts list necessary for swap:
- 5x120 (or 5x120.65 if you're a stickler) wheels
- C5 vette hubs
- gen5 camaro rotors
- gen5 camaro/V2 rear backing plate and ebrake assembly

25851190 OE Service Rear Brake
25851205 OE Service Rear Brake

parts i actually ordered:
- 18x8.5 +35mm VMR V705 in 5x120 (need new TPMS and tires)
- precision auto hub bearings (same part numbers as timken, front: 513139, rear: 512153)
- front rotors: GM 92245928 (amazon), rear rotors: GM 92245929 (used 74 miles, schram auto [automotive recycler])
- pads (centric [stoptech], front: 105.10010, rear: 105.10530 [ceramic])
- tires (falken ze912, 245/45R18)
- TPMS (4x GM 25774006)
- ebrake parts (listed above)

i am wanting this year to stay pretty close to the stock specs so i can reuse my winter tires next winter (225/50R18). then next year in the spring i'll switch up my setup to some nice 20s which have yet to be chosen and keep these VMR as a winter wheel set. so realistically i'll only be running the stock 245/45R18 tire size for this 'season' so i'm probably not going to care about having really nice tires on the car.

the hubs i just ordered this morning. the rotors i have to do some looking around to see where i can get the best deal. same with tires and the TPMS.

i'll keep this thread updated and will attempt to take a bunch of pictures of the process. let me know with thoughts, ideas, critiques, questions, etc. i'm an open book, hah.

Those should look good....

Do you think there is enough travel on the V1 ebrake adjuster to adjust your way out of the ebrake drum diameter difference between the V1 and the Camaro rotor? This guy had his ebrake shoes modified...

Good Luck with the build!

i was told by someone that did it (he actually just sold the car) that all he did was adjust the ebrake and it was fine. i'm going off of his word that it'll work, but i guess i won't know for sure until i actually get there.

per that thread they'd need to be adjusted approximately 5/16" outwards in comparison to stock:

The diameter of the V1 parking brake drum is 7 1/2 inches and the Camaro SS is 7 13/16 Its way bigger.
also, the guy that had the shoes relined was putting V brakes on a grand prix GXP so his measurements might be a bit off compared to what we'd need.

Why? 8.5" wheel for an 8.5" wheel?

i'm selling my house and moving this year so not only do i want to save a little money, but i don't want to be sitting outside an apartment building with a $3000 set of 20s waiting to be pillaged by the lesser people of earth.

and if you read i am keeping close to stock specs to reuse winter tires i already own and reusing these wheels as winter beaters for the rest of time.

i'll get nice wheels next year.

i don't want staggered wheels, those are probably too big, and any OEM wheel is not the kind of look i want with my car. i'm not looking for tire size or traction, this is purely cosmetic.

Why not machine the hubs down to 66.9mm?

gonna have to machine one or the other. wouldn't you agree that the rotors would be easier?

I would machine the hubs IF there is enough material. Then you could pull off the shelf V2 rotors if you needed to replace.

v2 rear rotors are the same as the gen5 camaro rotors. same part numbers.

and the gen5 camaro rotors are needed up front. therefore camaro rotors are what we want all around anyway.

I'd been compiling the specs I could find for hubs and it looks like the 2011 caprice ppv hubs might be very close. Abs compatabilty, spline count/diameter I have no idea. Flange is slightly undersized compared to camaro5 being oversize by .300"

2004 CTS
TIMKEN HA590082
lug stud: M12-1.5 Length 41.5mm, shoulder length: 8mm
Bolt Circle Diameter 4.527 in.
Flange Diameter 5.721 in.
Flange Offset 1.660 in.
Flange Shape Modified
Wheel Pilot Diameter 70.1mm

2011 Caprice PPV
TIMKEN HA590299
Bolt Circle Diameter 4.724 in.
Flange Diameter 5.689 in.
Flange Offset 1.654 in.
Flange Shape Modified
Wheel Pilot Diameter 66.81mm
Alternate/OEM Part Number(s): 92192305

you have to compare a CTS-V hub, not the CTS. they're not the same.
