Default Keeping V cool?

Does the hive have any input on keeping these beasties cooler? I get that they are set to run hot but I'm increasing compression and worry that I need to upgrade either oil or water cooling. Thermostat changes are easy but was wondering about improved radiator or fans? Thoughts - options? This goes along with significant engine upgrades and 12 year old oe components.

What's your definition of hot?

I'd say it runs pretty cool. It just requires an adjustment to the fan settings. Stock radiator and I stay in the 190s and peak at 203 on a hot day in traffic with A/C on, with an LSA supercharger.

I had a fat Alradco radiator, and decided the added thickness made working in the tight confines at the front of the engine bay too much of a pain in the ***, so I went back to stock. I've got my fan settings lowered in the tune, so my temps are about what MN V sees on the street. During track events, with either radiator the coolant temp goes up into the 210s or even 220s (depending on how hot the day is), but as soon as I pull off track it drops right back down to the mid 190s.

I do have an oil cooler setup that I installed myself, so that helps. The oil cooler was installed to help the engine cope with the track abuse; I don't think it's needed for street duty.

Currently the ls6 is just exhaust/intake/tune and runs in the normal V temp ranges I read about here. The next setup is an ls2 with p&p 243 heads, cosmetic 0.40 gasket, cam headers, and ported doorman ls2. I had understood compression increase equals temp increase. As the LS2 is already 0.5 at 11:1 higher compression than the ls6 before I increase it I had concerns. I need to run the numbers but I think I’ll be ~11.5:1 with the new setup. Yes we have 93 octane here, no worries.

I’ll likely go just a bit lower temp thermostat and have the tune set accordingly. All of the cooling and oil system will be fresh oem except the radiator/fans which looked good.

Unless you required a new engine due to damage, why would you replace a good LS6 with an LS2? The gains are minimal when you consider the cost. Mod for mod an LS6 is damn near close to an LS2, especially if you keep the same 243 heads on each. Also a stock LS2 is 10.9:1 FWIW.

I did the math on time/cost if I have any issues after she’s all up and running. Purely on consumables, bolts gaskets, downtime, etc it’s worth it to remove the question mark. I’m in the next block at a cost that I can be flat/ahead of the current setup. I’m an LS6 fan so no hate there, Can’t deal with rebuild timeline of the daily being off the road. Otherwise 100% agree with you.

The ls6 will be up for sale! I haven't decided on selling it as is all together, refreshing the top and selling, or parting splitting block/heads.

Lots of LS6 well over 200k miles. If you don't mind the work go for it though. Used LS6 gets some good money to offset it.

I think I'd have a hard time parting with the LS6. I'd probably be searching for a swap candidate.

We built a custom one for the TT 05. Temps in Houston hover around 200.
