interesting....
Just wanted to touch up on the subject. I once saw a part number for the "new" rear but still unsure which one. Will check the faq site ans see what i can find.
Im starting toi hear a whine, Or im psyching myself out in thinking im hearing a whine. Its more evident at around 23-28 mph and goes away slightly, but still there.
Im wondering if this is just tire noise, fun-flats, or is this the diff whining. It does seem to only be audible when on the throttle, though litely of course, but i have heard similar or identical whines when off the throttle.
Anyways, will get this checked out and the services managers at Braman Cadillac have been friends with me and my family for YEARS!!! My folks have always loved their caddies!! This is the (my V) 9th caddy to date, including my dad's new STS4.
So, is the new diff (06') the real thing or would i be best to find another diff carrier for example a dana?

Dave,
I assume you bought yours from Young Cadillac? I purchased mine from Freeway, logged just over 5,000 miles on mine and had to have the rear replaced for whining. Fortunately, It was done without issue or resistance by them (Freeway is terrific!).
The car now has just over 6,500 miles on it and the outside rears tires are worn to the wear bars. My dealership informed me that GM is replacing those as well as part of an identified rear issue. I will find out more when I go in this Friday to get my winter tires installed and chat it up with the Service manager (Dean).
Not only is the rear end weak, but it will not hold proper alignment and geometry. I am thinking that this car is yet another failure on GM's part.

My rear end blew after 3300 miles. Getting it replaced under warranty with the 2006 Rear end, but the dealership gave me all kinds of **** about it and claimed this hasn't happened to anyone else, and said the next one is on me.

Gang,
My brother is a senior exec at a one of the largest GM dealerships in the Midwest. They recently took in a CTS-V. The service manager was so hot for it that he took it out in the back lot, dumped the clutch, and immediately blew the rear end.
My bro knows I've got the hots for a CTS-V so he took some extra effort w/ the service mgr to get the scoop from GM. The story is that the rear end IS strong enough, but any rear end taking that much rear-hop abuse throws off the geometry so bad that it snaps it off.
At any rate, they had the rear end replaced with the STS-V rear end (the official replacement for broken CTS rears) and my bro says that you can definitely tell its way beefier with finned heat exchanges. They took out the CTS-V again, beat the crap out of it, and it was completely solid.
That wimpy rear end was the only thing holding me back from dumping my GS400 and now that I know the STS rear end is the right fix, I'm definitely going to go for it. I might wait to get a used '06 as they have the updated LS2 V8 along w/ the STS-V rear as standard equip. We'll see.

The 2004/2005 CTS-V's shared the same differential with SRX's and base CTS's with only minor changes. The 2006 CTS-V's and the new STS-V's have the same rear differential. The case is in fact beefed up as are the half shafts. Unfortunately I'm told the ring and pinion have not been touched. There have been no failures of 2006 rear diff's that I know of.
Signed,
Mr. 4 differentials and counting.

Well, I'm on my third differential. The first one was replaced at 2900 miles due to noise. The second one was replace at 5500 miles and was noisey and leaking. The good news is that the third diff is the new 06 model PN 15793756.
All have been covered by warranty.
