Default Converter setup right for carbe 6.0l

Well haven't been on here in a while have made many changes in my project since then. Due to budget issues my current setup consists of a stock lq4 with victor jr intake, 312 heads with fresh valve job, stock cam, stock exhaust manifolds, msd 6010 box, edelbrock 750 carb, I'm guessing around 400-425 hp and about 410-440 tq. I'm running a powerglide behind it with a manual valve body setup and no brake. I will be foot braking it my question is how do you find the right stall speed for this????

There is a lot more to look at then stall speed. I would start by calling Coan, Jason is a genius.

What is the vehicle weight? A stock engine will not respond well to any real sized stall, but a bump up over stock will probably work well, anything that will foot brake to 2000 would work well, but that also again depends on vehicle weight and tires/differential.

The gear definately matters, dont want a 3.55 gear with a 5000 converter. Other than that, I disagree. If you are racing it, don't go any lower than 3500. If you are bracket racing it, I would go with something around 4500. One of my cars only makes 426hp, weights 3400 lbs., and has a converter that stalls 5400 rpm. It runs 11.40's with high 1.4 60's. Just my $.02.

One question I would ask if choosing a converter for drag racing is: where does the engine make peak torque?

Here is a link to a dyno test of a stock LQ4 from Car Craft:

http://www.carcraft.com/projectbuild...t_results.html

The engine has an amazingly flat torque curve with a peak of about 4500. However it is in the 430 ft lb range from 3600 all the way to 5500. I am no racing torque converter expert, but I would be inclined to pick something in the 3,500 to 4,000 range for race only after looking at that torque curve.

Yea, speaking from street car terms, a big stall would not be very fun with a stock engine, a 3200 would get my vote max, if you wanted the most from it on a trip to the track, if it is a track car, i have no idea, i dont have a race car, my primary is a T56, the other project will probably get a 3000 or so with the turbo in the future.

I run a 4.88 gear, and a 30x9 radial slick. The 425hp is at the crank, not the wheels.

I run an iron headed 350, because of class rules. The transmission is a th-200 (metric 200). A 5000 stall converter would probably be too much for that gear, especially with a th-350 2.52 low gear. I bet it would like a 4000 stall though.
