Default Wanting 500 hp with a carb

Well this is my first ls motor so I'm a little new but have been doing research and I'm looking for advice and suggestions. I have a 2001 lq4 with 317 heads, stock so far and I'm looking to put this in a 68 chevy c-10. I'm am looking to mill the heads .030" to raise the compression, then install a victor jr intake with msd 6010 and a tsp torquer v3 cam with a .650" or .675" spring package. Also going to install a ls2 timing chain, headers and still need to find front accessories. What I'm trying to ask is if milling the heads and installing the v3 cam will require any modification to fit like flycut the pistons. Also looking to be around 500 hp at the flywheel. And is their anything that I missed and will need.dum

Zones combo has got to be pretty close to that. Some CNC ported heads would guarantee it and they are very reasonable.

Yea, i milled mine .030 and have a larger cam with still.110 PTV, so you would be fine.

Power wise, you will be near 500, but the heads being ported would make damn sure of it.

Alright thanks guys, ported heads will depend on what extra money is left. Would porting the 317's be worth it or try to find different heads?

It would be worth it as they will flow over 300 CFM with massaging, a set of LS6 castings will only raise compression a bit so it is not worth the cost unless squeezing every bit out of it is needed.

Ok, great info and just what I needed to hear. I will go and check in with a local shop I know about porting the heads. What about a carb? Right now I've got a 770cfm Holley truck avenger and am wondering if there's one that will work better. or should I just massage this one once I am up and running?
Thanks for all the help also.

I would not have a local shop port your heads. The consistency of the CNC programs out there will almost certainly produce vastly superior results. You can buy a set of CNC ported LS6 heads for $1100 from places like Texas Speed and Total Engine Airflow. You will get a bump in compression and 300+ CFM intake flow. After a lot of research, that is what I did and I was not disappointed. As for the carb, if you want to make power, you need to look at the Holley HP series. They make power. Leave the truck avenger to the mild performance guys.

I understand
The shop I know of here does mostly Ls builds these days. If I can swing it new cnc heads would be the way to go. I was also thinking the 770 I have was not really suited for this application. Thanks again for the responses, it helps me learn and confirm what I need to do. I'll post what I end up deciding to do. Time to get busy!

If I were starting from scratch, I would do this too. Just remember, they use a different intake manifold and you have to buy a set of l92 intake rocker arms as they are different.

I built the carcraft carbed, L92 headed, comp cam 6.0. I copied the build part for part. They claimed 551hp. So I should be pretty close to that. I can mash the gas at 55mph and blow the tires off!!!

Sounds like a nice truck! Reading what you've got i would say it's pretty close.

I've got a 68 chevy c-10 short bed still being put together with 6.0 lq4, 700r4,12 bolt with 3.73, lowered but with air ride.

By the way my friends been bothering me ask what everyone is getting for gas mileage.

With a smaller converter i can get 17-18 in town and over 20mpg on the highway. I have a 3400 converter now and its worse now because i drive under the stall speed so im wasting energy.
