Yes, the box needs the cam sensor. Why can't you keep that when you get rid of the VVT?

Was surfing the MSD site and found this today

If the motor is back firing through the carburetor or exhaust, there is a good possibility that the problem is related to the cam sensor. The LSx motor has a 50% chance of starting each time you crank on it even if the cam sensor has failed.
So I guess if you are a betting man than you don't have to have a cam sensor

You have to have the cam sensor. Switch to an LS2 style front cover and cam sensor.

Why does he need a LS2 setup? The stock stuff should work fine.

I thought the stock front cover was the same with the front cam sensor.

The VVT cover is deeper than a standard cover, and will only fit with truck or 2010+ Camaro FEAD.

I would just spend the $30 on an LS2 timing cover and that way if you want to change to ANY acessory drive in the future. Eric L

Yup, just change the timing cover, cam sensor, and upper sprocket and you're set. I'm pretty sure the cam sensor is deeper on the VVT cover...

What do they look like? I have a half moon on my RS for a LS2 on the timing gear and then the 09 4.8 has the OE with 3 or 4 spots on the ridge that are separated, they both run and start fine so far.

These are the cam gears I got and the front cover to convert my ly6. Have not started it yet due to a car accident (was rear ended) and could not work in the garage.

Here is the pic. I got both a single bolt and 3 bolt cam both have the same pattern/portion of raised metal and it also matches what is on the vvt cam phaser on my 2009 ly6

If the VVT timing cover is thicker then there will be older water pumps you cannot use, my older pump i just swapped out barely fit over the LS2 style timing cover.

A set of headers, motor mounts, f body oil pan and you are pretty much set, you will need the 6012 ignition controller.

Dang. This thread actually helped me out. My car would occasionaly backfire when starting it. I remembered this thread and discovered my cam sensor plug wasn't fully seated.

Here is what the 4X cam gear looks like. I think you can get them with a single bolt type mounting, but not 100% sure on that. With the MSD 6012 box, you have to use the 4X gear.
