Default got a new toy

Holley Ultra HP 850

also picked up a complete jet kit (gasoline), complete air-bleed kit, and i'm picking up a complete accelerator pump tuning kit maybe next week. hoping to have the carb on the car by the end of next week and semi-dialed in. going out next month in good air looking for some 10.5x's!

Those are suppose to be some nice carbs. Holley really had to step things up a notch or two with all the aftermarket competition these days.

The only problem i can see is that thing has enough adjustability to really get someone like me in trouble.

what kit is that? i'm talking about the pump cam kit, it's maybe $30 or something, comes with 8-10 different colored cams for the pump tuning. I wouldn't buy a box of squirters or anything if that's what the expensive kit comes with.

at this power level, i see no benefit to that large of a carb.

steve, it's a complete kit. comes with squirter nozzles, pump arm cams, extra diaphrams, springs, etc.

why wouldn't you buy a kit with nozzles in it? especially when you can get it for like 70% off?

p/n 36-184

Of course, that is not just the peak power benefit, i want one because the street manners are supposed to dominate any other carb out there. Comes with the technology i guess, and if/when i go with a 400+ ci motor, there is no need for a carb swap, LOL.

because you just toss a 40 squirter up front and a 35 in the rear and call it a day LOL

then all you'd need is the pump cam kit, or just swap in the 50cc front kit if you still have an issue with a lean bog.

Well, this isn't the only carb I work on routinely and I'd like to have more tuning stuff. Also, I want to see if I can fix it without the huge pump shot.

Several members have reported the HP carbs won't need the big pump shot. Most claim they work right out of the box.

I have to dissagree.

I had to dial in everything on my H/P carb... went with 40's and a red cam and the 37's in the rear with the 2nd biggest black cam in the rear

And that's on an old skool 355

A lot of it is going to be based on manifold height, booster signal, vacuum readings at idle and part throttle, etc. Anyone who has spent some time tuning their own stuff knows its highly unlikely that ANY "shelf" carb will be optimized out of the box. You're living a pipe dream if you think the opposite. I'm tuning more heavily now and need some supplies, which is.why I bought, and am buying what I said.

Yes, results may vary. That just means it didn't work on your set up.

Doesn't change the fact that several guys said their out of the box HP carbs worked well on their LS motors. Their posts are in the archives.

All I was trying to pass on is the off idle bog common to LS motors is not for certain with HP carbs. You may not need a 50 cc shot.

I managed to take the 50 cc accel pump off my motor and drop back to 30 cc pump with a pink cam by adjusting the air bleeds on my classic DP. So I don't know that the big pump really fixes anything so much as masks other problems. But again, that is my set up.

i plan to play with air bleeds some as well, but going too far with that can cause rich or lean conditions throughout the power band, where as upping pump shot will only effect tip in.

got the new carb on. if first impressions are indicative of performance, this thing is going to FLY! set the float levels, adjusted the pump arms and hit the start button. fired right up after a couple revolutions, and ran with no input on the throttle whatsoever. let it run about 30 seconds with a high-ish idle and then got right on the Idle bleed valve function in the air cleaner stud hole. it's pretty cool. had it idling with about 3 turns of that valve. hit the throttle, has a stumble (i expected it) so i shut it down. changed out the squirter nozzles and fired it back up. no throttle input again and it immediately idled dead steady where i set it before. awesome. the old carb took forever before it would idle on it's own. it still has a small stumble, which i also expected. hoping to do some pump cam tuning tomorrow morning before class

for now, here's some installed pics...this is one bad *** carb.

Looks sick Matt. Does the carb clear the stool hood without the spacer by chance?
