Goal: 6.50's 1/8 with carb...what do I need.
I posted this on YB too, so if you responded there you don't have to again. I've asked tons of ?'s already lol, but this is my goal, so I want to know what would be the best engine for me to get.
I have a 3100lb Fox body mustang. I want a carb. that's my only stipulation. What's my best bet to be able to run mid 6's 1/8 mile in a 3100lb car.
LQ4, LQ9, LY6, LS1, etc.
I'm willing to use nitrous to reach the goal if need be. Was hoping to do one of these stock long block with a cam and spring change, but whatever I need to reach the goal.
Sorry for beating a dead horse. Thanks again.

i have stock shortblock 5.3 that was given to me with a 02 ls6 cam with 806 heads because 1 of the 5.3 heads had dropped a valve.so it is probably 9-1 or less compression.i put this motor in last thursday and took it racing saturday and ran a 6.7 at 104 mph off the trailer with no tuning.this was with a 150 shot and a 850 quick fuel carb which i know is too big but that is all i have.the car weighs 3000 with me in it.the car has a powerglide and 9'' rear with 3.70 gear.i know it will run 6.5 with tuning.

I think any one of them can do it if built with the right combo of parts.
But with just a cam/spring swap ???? maybe an LS3 or L92 if you can get the weight down... now if spraying all it comes down to is how many shots it will hold.

Its a hard call
Id go either
LQ9 and purchase l92 heads (Flywheel cut as needed)
Or go ly6 and do what you need to up the compression ratio. 9.67:1 wont be enough I'm sure. If you mill the heads and use a thinner head gasket you might get close to were you want but I expect will will have to fly wheel cut the pistons. Might be better off just putting new pistons in?
I went ly6 but my goals are not nearly as aggressive as yours.

Best deal I've found is $1200 on a LQ4 in my area and $1500 on a LY6. If I'm gonna have to pay that much, I wanna make the right choice.

LY6 has the better heads (L92 heads) to start but I guess it comes down to mileage/use the motor come out of....Whats worse ??? a Taxi or a work truck ????

Did you use PRC 6.0 or 5.3 heads? Just wondering as one of the cam experts on here recommended me to use the Stage 2.5 5.3 heads on the 6.0 to get the compression up.

Could do t without the arp bolts, all day long with good tuning. But wouldn't hurt to throw better bolts in. An aggressive cam and big stall with gear would prolly get you in the 6.80-7.0 range at that weight. Throw some heads on there like speed suggested and possible 6.50s with really good tuning. If not, 150 shot would get you there no problem.

Some of you are getting tired of me and multiple threads I know, but gonna post here too.
For the exact same money I can end up with a stock LY6 with a cam or a LS1 with PRC stage 2.5 5.3L heads and cam.
Would I still be better off going LY6 looking at it this way?
Thanks again.

To compare, my 89 RS, 2001 6.0, stock long block, with a 6 speed, runs 7.1 all day with the car at 3150 and me 300, 3450 down the track, now if you lighten up that stang, and I am taking a **** you are not as big as me, imagine my motor in your car, which is cam only, drop the weight to 2900 pounds, and automatic that will be faster than my manual, if you are say 150-200, that is 3050-3100 pounds down the track, I would imagine 6.7 or faster in that lighter chassis. Then there is the option for better heads that will male even more power across the board, net a couple more tenths and you would have 6.5 car or so.
We have a member that went 9s in the 1/4 with a stock 6.0, milled stock 799 heads, and a cam, but his stang was heavily gutted. Impressive none the less.
