Default Is .030 alot to turn off the crank?

I got a call from the machine shop today & we can fix my crankshaft (spun rod bearing) and he said our options were to turn it .030 & get it back this week, or send it out & have it remanufactured back to stock specs. The price is really close but the the time is where the issue is. If we send it out, looking at over 3 weeks to get it back. Would you guys have a problem turning that much off it & turning it 7000 rpm? This is the first time I'v ever rebuilt the bottom end of an engine, so I really don't know if that would be high risk to do it that way or that is perfectly normal? Seems like alot of material to remove, I want the car running asap, but I don't want to be afraid to rev it either. Any opinions? He said they sell bearings as big as .040.

Have you looked at the price of a new crank ?
Seems it would be faster and better than either option they gave you.... IMO (unless it's something special/custom)

I'm not a machinist but due machine parts at work from time to time (Industrial Maintenance Mechanic)... and .030 is a lot. IF it was a stocker, then maybe.

the only new ones I have looked at are aftermarket ones online, but they are pretty big bucks. About 3x what it costs to have mine welded & returned to stock dimensions. It's just the time thing, 3 weeks during peek season is alot in Western NY, we only have a few precious mos to drive without snow on the ground!!..lol The guy that's doing my block looked around for one that's already been remanufactured, but can't find one, do you know of anywhere to get one?

Agree with TXSZ66AVLANCHE. I had mine turned .30 and he is correct about it being junk afterwards. And I aint affraid to spin into the 7000 so. Been running it for about 6 months this way and no problems.

Just make shure you plasti-gauge it. I did all my bottom end work in one night. Complete and working on the top end by the next day buttoning it up. Installed from start to finish it took me four days by myself. Ment to add this to the other reply.

You can get used std/std cranks on E-Bay (and maybe here) for $100 plus shipping...

<030 is fine, but you may be able to find a crank for next to nothing off here or Craigs list ect that will be STD STD.

Going .030 under is no big deal. You can even go to a 2" journal or Honda if you're frisky with it. Just get plenty of radius in the corners.

Stock cranks are cheap and everywhere. Save the time and money and go back stock.

Alot of pro engine builders are going thinner on the mains(turning the crank.020 or more).to keep the bearing cooler.the more the cranks turned the thicker the bearing.which helps move heat from the surface.
