Default will 6010 work with boost?

I was excited to find out that aside from the edelbrock msd timing box, they offered one with programmable timing control, the msd 6010. I downloaded the software to play with it and find it only controls timing up to atmospheric, no timing pull for boost. Seems like a relatively easy thing to accomplish as they are already interfacing with a map sensor, would have been a good way to sell a 5 dollar map sensor for 60 bucks as well since they would have to specify which map to use for the application.

How are you boosted carb guys getting timing done on these motors?

you can hook a 1, 2 or 3 bar map sensor to the 6010 box and it will advance or retard timing accordingly. There is a setting in the software controls to tell it what type of map sensor is being used. it is in there instructions.

Look at page 5 here

Regardless of map sensor used I do not see any way to retard timing under boost, MSD's site says it features "Programmable two-step rev limiter, vacuum advance curve and step retard"

Tech said when I called that it does not allow retard under boost, the graph in their software stops at 15 psia which is about atmospheric (0 psia is a complete vacuum).

Also what is a step retard?

Edit-Wow, learning a lot from the tech sheet, hopefully all my questions will be answered in there... Thank you Pop!

I see, allows you to select 1 2 or 3 bar map, 1 was the default which is why it showed 15 psia. Their tech must not have been very familiar with this product as they said it would not retard under boost pressures, had me worried for a bit I would have to look for another solution...Thanks!

Most guys just Lock it out after 3k rpm's. Can't it just be rpm based not map based?

Sure it can! But the OP was asking about boost, which requires a MAP sensor...

I read up alittle on the kit Vortech sells for the old BBC and SBC and they say to run a colder plug and a max of 26' of timing. I dont know if any of this helps with the LS engines but it might.

I am running the 6010 with a 3 bar map sensor and 22 lbs of boost, To answer your question you can set up the 6010 to adjust timing for boost. I have it set up for a base timing of 28 deg and it retards the timing to 16 deg under full boost.
