Default Head gasket question

I'm planning on milling my 799 heads. I'm looking at taking off .030. Is there any preference in....

1. Taking .020 off the heads and using a .010 thinner head gaskets.
2. Taking .030 off the heads and use stock head gaskets.

Does it matter? Any benefit? Based off the numbers in theory, the amount coming off is the same. I've searched, but didn't find anything.

Mathematically that'll work.... but sometimes the gasket thickness you'll want/need isn't available....got to watch the quench.

But, on that note....I wouldn't try running a .020 gasket Vs. the .051 and try to save the machine shop costs.

Use #1. You will gain more compression that way.

Thanks....That's what I'm looking for. Was one a better option than the other. Cost isn't the issue as it's only $80 to mill the heads.

Default Piston height and gasket thickness.

Where is your piston? It it at zero deck height? Or is it sticking out of the hole? If I remember mine was on average .007" above the deck. If yours were the same then I would use the .051 thick gasket as it would give you a quench of .044" which is a good distance for a street/performance engine, IMO. I build to .045" as standard practice. If you use the .041 gasket it puts your quench at .034" which is too close. Stick to .040"-.050" quench. Piston height should be your determining factor as to your head gasket thickness.

799 heads are for a 6.0L engine? I am not versed on the part numbers. Your bore would be 4.000"(maybe a little bigger if you bored it) so don't use a gasket bigger than 4.100 bore. Figure out where your piston is, pick your head gasket thickness and then decide how much to take off your heads. Use a compression ratio calculator before your have the heads machined just to be certain you'll be where you want. I use the one online at kbsilvolite.com, very handy. Good luck with the build.

What head gasket would you use on a stock 6.0 with LS3 heads? No mods to block, pistons or heads.
