Default 6010 no fire....please help!

ok so i have a 2003 lq4 6.0, carbed, 6010 box harness and pro-data software. i've cranked on it but have no spark/fire. here is a run down of what i have tried so far. all of this msd stuff is new, i haven't taken it out of the box for 3 years but its new.

-hooked the grey and black wire to direct ground

-hooked the pink wire to a 12v switch directly to battery

-i have 10.6 volts cranking

-12.5 volts not cranking

-i have 8 volts at the crank sensor while not cranking and it fluxuates between 3-8 whiles cranking. i even tried a different crank sensor just for $h!ts to see if it would matter. it didn't

-i hooked up to the laptop and the guages do read on the maf while cranking, and the timing does show 12 degree's, but the RPM guage shows NOTHING WHILE CRANKING.

-i've tried different pills, no pill...etc just tryin to get fire.

i'm thinkin my box is bad....but before i buy another i want to make sure. anyhelp would be greatly appreciated.

How is your battery routing? It is best to have the least amount of wire between battery and msd. Also check your grounds, make sure you have chassis, engine, engine to chassis grounds. Also make sure your ground isn't on a painted or powered coated surface. Also if ground on the back of the head make sure to hit it with some sandpaper to get a good connect. Where is your switched 12 coming from? fuse box, starter?

If he has 10.6 V when cranking then the power and grounds are all good.

I would concentrate on the no RPM signal first.

Try pulling all the plugs and on a fully charged battery crank it over to see if you get an RPM reading. I seem to remember some posts where some boxes, especially the early ones, would not fire unless they spin at a certain RPM.

MSD has a user forum. You might check there.

MSD also has pretty responsive user support. Try calling them and they will hook you up with a tech that will walk you through some steps. Worst case they have you send in the box and they will tell you if it is bad.

i ohm checked my grounds there good. i have engine to frame, frame to batt, and i have one that goes engine to body. the 12v ign switch is ran from pos batt to switch to pink wire that goes to msd box. and i have ohms checked that as well and it is good. i am getting a solid 12v to the box on the pink wire. so there is no problems there.

By chance are the coils hooked up correct and not swapped? Never heard of that before but makes me wonder. Assuming you are getting fuel.

I'm just tryin to get spark at this point. fuel is irrelevant at this point. that will be next of course but right now i am just trying to get spark. Ok, so i got home and took the spark plugs out and cranked it over pretty fast and abra-ca-dabra, i got spark......BUT when i put the plugs back in and tried to actually fire it up it had no spark again. and I have a good battery it cranks like it should but i'm wandering if i need to crank a little faster to get it to work. any suggestions?

How do you know there is no spark when plugs are in if there is no fuel?

i pulled one plug back out and checked for spark. And also another way i new was on my laptop it wasn't reading rpm. when the box doesn't read rpm then the box doesn't deliver a spark. before when i had all the plugs out and seen it had RPMs it then delivering spark.

Man, that car is an embarrassment! I will take it off your hands for you if you want to get that eyesore out of the garage!

This is not a totally uncommon problem. Contact MSD's tech line and they might be able to help. I seem to remember they could load a new flash or something. You might check their web site and see if there is a new firmware load you can down load too.

Pretty interesting, you can try running 2 batteries as mentioned above just for the starter.

  • Bad battery
  • Poor wiring
  • Bad MSD box
Take the battery in and have it professionally checked, go over your wiring (again!), and last, if it goes there, send the box in for a checkup.
