PCV for my carb setup
Ok so I'm sure this question has been asked hundreds of times. Buuut my question is that my motor pushes a fair amount of oil tho. So I don't wanna run all my oil through my intake and I'd prefer to not slime my engine bay in oil mist. So what do you guys think would be best for my pcv setup? Just wanna get some opinions or ideas. Thanks for any input fellas!

I run a couple breathers, and a pcv valve with a small catch can in line between the pcv valve and carb port. Im fixin to add a hole on the front of the valley plate and stick a breather on it
Just watch buying the cheap plastic air/oil seperators, lowes has metal ones with glass bowls on em

I've gotta figure out a PVC hookup too. Right now I've got nothing on either of the lines on the valve cover and I get a slight discoloration to the valve cover near the port after about 400 miles. Is this small amount normal?

It should be fine with just a breather and standard pcv setup. I just don't like the oil goin back in the carb. over time it will be yellow/oily in the intake, all that crap is goin back in there.
This is what Im thinkin of putting on the valley plate

Getting oil mist in the intake is the same as lowing the octane of the fuel. You run the risk of detonation.
The LS1 method of putting the PCV valve on the valve cover is more prone to sucking oil. GM went to the valley vent and better baffling on the LS6 and beyond to supposedly reduce the problem. I run an LS6 style valley PCV set up, but still I have been meaning to put in a catch can for some time.
If you go the catch can route do a little reading and get one that actually works. The ones with wire mesh or sponge type fillings eventually saturate with oil and don't work as well as the ones that just mechanically separate the oil with a number of turns.

I also run a 1 inch valve cover spacer to clear my roller rockers. I think that this helps get the pcv farther from the oil. I theory anyways. Also wouldn't you have to use a hell of a lot of oil to lower the octane of the fuel?

I think it can have some effect on octane, mainly at high RPMs. My LS3 has the valley port and I run it straight to the throttle body port and have the small breather in the valve cover. Ive checked a few times and have yet to see any oil in the rubber hose , so I think the valley style PCV is pretty effective. Ive only got a little over 200 miles on my combo so far, though.

Were do you guys recommend to buy a oil catch can? Also is it ok to pull pcv out of one valve cover then just cap off the other valve cover. I only ask that since it would make it easier and more simple.

Who all has run a catch can with the stock lq4 pcv? I can really only find info on fuel injected systems. Would i just run from my pcv to the catch can to the carb and then run a breather on the other valve cover?

You have to let air into the engine to pull air out of the engine. PCV doesn't work without the fresh air source. Without fresh air coming in you can build excessive crank case pressure and blow gaskets and even push oil past the rings into the combustion chamber. Blowing the dipstick out is common as well without proper venting.

Mine is plugged on the right front and 3/8" hose from left rear to rear of carb. Seems to be fine so far.
My motor only pulls 11.X" of vacuum at idle.

On the vacuum, My SBC406 has about 5-6 ", but it doesn't matter because I have power nothing on it. Sounds like a Harley idling! The LS3 pulls a bunch of vacuum. I haven't checked it, but my brake manufacturer said It required 16" of vacuum for my setup and the brakes work great, even with multiple pedal pushes at idle. its crazy how strong it runs in spite of being mild enough to pull 16+" of vacuum.

Yep, Comp XE290S solid FLAT tappet, LOL. Old school all the way! Runs like a cat with a firecracker up its.... Well you know.
I will wind up putting an LS engine in it at some point, but I have the 72 and the 68 is in great running condition, as is.
Sorry about the jack ,OP.
