The book also says that they were installed under vehicle warranty and a direct factory replacment for the 186 and 492 straight plug head. So angle plug heads were out well before the late 80's/ 199X aluminum corvette heads, and I would guess these early angle plug heads were being installed by the factory, not sitting on a shelf in a warehouse.
Here's one for you, these are what's on my 69, they came straight or angled.

Yes, the 69 DZ 302 used a 350 4bolt block w/ a 4 inch bore and the 67-68 302'S used a 327 block w/ a 4 inch bore.

A 302 is a four inch bore block like a 327 or 350, with the short stroke crank and rods that came from a 283. Anyone can go and build a 302 cubic inch motor with the right parts. Its not so much the casting numbers on the back of the block, its the "DZ" that is stamped in the front passenger deck.

I don't pretend to known everything about Z 28's, and I could be completely wrong, but if you read this it doesn't say anything about RPO Z28 getting a 327 or a 350. This info only says 302's. The 327 or 350 4 inch bore blocks were probably used, a 327 block, for small journal engines of 67 and 68, and a 350 block for the large journal engines from 69. Sorry its so long

I got that info from http://www.68rscamaro.com/camfacts/z28/, which I found by doing a search for "RPO Z28", seems pretty credible. There were lots of other sites with pretty much the same info.

Another thing I just thought of, wern't the Z 28's supposed to be geared toward the Trans Am racing series which had a restriction on the size of the motor you could run? I think that is why they only got the 302.

all large journal 327 cranks were forged im pretty sure. The one in my garage that came out of my old 69 camaro is 1130 or 80 is the cast number on it.
