I have my brother-in-law's 1967 Camaro SS in my garage and it just died on him yesterday while he was driving down the freeway. He called me and asked for assistance so I went to where he was broke down. I turned the ignition and and the car would not start. So, I pulled the air breather and pumped the throttle and no gas was being sprayed into the carb. ( The engine is a 396 with 375 horse power) I figured he ran it out of gas so I had 10 gallons of gas in the back of my truck. I poured all ten gallons in the car and the octane rating of the gas was 88 octane. It was fresh gas because I had filled the cans up about two hours earlier. Now, when I attempted to start the engine it would fire up no problem but then suddenly die again. I repeated this several times and the same result. It would fire right up then suddenly die after 1-2 seconds. Any ideas of what is going on here? Please help!

Mechanical pump is supplying sufficient pressure to carb. I think carb may need a rebuild kit! $45.00 from Auto Zone. Part #1477. That's on the agenda for tomorrow.

Ok! I rebuilt the carb this morning and reinstalled on the engine. I turned the ignition and the car does exactly what it did before! (NO CHANGE) So, now what? I am getting ample fuel pressure to the carb. The engine will fire right up initially and then just die after 1-2 seconds. HELP!!!

Hallelujah!!!! I found the problem!! It was the ignition switch itself. It had a short in it. Aslo, due to this short the junction box on the firewall melted also. I replace wiring and installed new ignition switch and junction box. The car runs fine now!!!
