The SS was originally just a dress up package and you could even get it on a 6cyl Impala in the late 50's early 60's. So it actually started out as a lame option so it won't really get any worse than that. A Cobalt SS with the supercharged 4 cyl will smoke a lot of old Chevy SS cars/trucks including the 454SS pickup and the 67-69 Camaro SS350.

I agree with the guy above me. If the SS name was just the fastest chevy then why isnt there a Corvette SS? I think that the SS name is used a fair enough, untill i see a day when i see just SS's rolling along on the street, I think the SS name is safe. Its not everyday that you see a SS that isnt a Camaro. But perhaps a little more conservativism is in order with the badge.

The cobalt might not be a "muscle car" but its a pretty bad *** car.
And the Malibu is now going to be in SS, I can kind of understand the Malibu because Malibu was avaliable in SS back in the day but a V6 Malibu just doesn't seem like an SS to me... even though I like V6 Monte Carlo SS cars.
SS=Bad *** version of the Badged car
And they are also releasing the Trailblazer in an SS package... come on an SUV with an SS package... In my mind SS is an elite name, and now with so many cars with the package I believe the SS name is losing elite status with many people. Chevy is just putting Super Sport on cars to sell more of them, and I don't think they realize that eventually no one will care about SS because they are too common and people seem to like the SS package because it is rare compared to other packages and is known for it's performance. I'm sure many will disagree and I know the goal is to provide affordable performance but I think they are taking it too far, go ahead and argue with me, agree, and vote on the poll.

I 100% disagree with you, All the SS cars and Trucks out right now are BAD ***! Trailblazer SS with the LS2 is an incredible SUV worthy of the SS name.

That would just be stupid if they put SS on a vette since the top is a Z06, and the top camaro should be a Z28.

Interesting question and responses. Here is the Wik:
"Super Sport, or SS, is an option package offered by Chevrolet on many of its vehicle lines since 1961. Some of the better-known models to bear the SS badge include the Camaro, Chevelle, El Camino, Impala, and Nova. Originally introduced in 1961 as an appearance package for the Impala, it became a high-performance package in 1966.
Until the Impala SS was brought back in 1994, the Super Sport package was only available on two-door passenger cars. Since then, however, the SS package has been used on a variety of GM vehicles, including pickup trucks, four-door sedans, and front wheel drive cars.
Both historically and today, the Super Sport package has typically included high-performance tires, heavy-duty suspension, and increased power, along with a variety of other performance and appearance upgrades. All SS models have come with "SS" markings."
With that said I think they went wrong in the 90's. I loved those Impala SS' but the name should have stayed with 2 dr passenger cars. Seems like Chevy just wanted to cash in on the SS name.
