3rd Gen vs. 4th Gen

I am a fan of both. I do think that a clean third gen looks very nice, but they are far and few between. I would like to get a third gen someday to clean up and put a modern power plant into.

I like all generations personally. Of course I would take a 69 SS over anything. But as far as practicality goes the 4th Gen is the most practical car. Having modern conviences and more power as well as daily driveability. The first car I fell in love with was a Black 87 IROC-Z... and I would love to own one. Third Gens are a great starter Camaro, and are also awesome when you put a modern power plant in them, or turn them into Drag Cars. A buddy of mine owns an Awesome 89 RS that he drove through highschool, then put a 406ci V8, gutted it, 3 Speed Auto... full out drag car, runs high 10's all Motor. But if I was going to buy a Camaro and do a motor swap I would do a 69 SS with an LS7 6 Speed over anything else. 3rd Gens are cool, but unless you do major mods the 4th Gen is superior in performance and convinence. As far as looks go, I can't really decide between the two... with look-good mods they both look great.

I voted 4th. I still love the 3rd gens, but over the years I've become a bigger 4th gen fan. I've owned four F-bodies, three have been 4th gens and one a 3rd gen.
My 3rd gen car was an '89 Formula 350 hardtop. It was my first F-body, and at the time I said I'd never move on to the 4th gen cars. But times changed and I've found happiness with the 4th gen. But I still have plenty of love and respect for the 3rd gen, and even now I still somewhat miss the 3rd gen I sold over 7 years ago.

I have owned 1 second gen (77 T/A) 2 3rd gen camaro's & 2 4th gen camaro's. Although I love the look of the 3rd gen and how you sit in the seat with the shifter & everything around you, I still have to go for my 4th gen SS. Best car I ever owned.

I owned two of each. 92 z28 350 TPI, 86 TA 355, 98 TA and 95 TA. Currently I have the 95 and 86. I miss the power the 98 TA had but the looks of a 92 Z from the hood louvers, wheels, interior, spoiler, fenders, everything. Looked beautiful.

I will most like ly be chastised for this but I'm not a huge fan of how 4th gens drive whey feel very fat and plush compared to the less refined (most would say redneck) more virile intense driving experience and you cant beat the look of a 3rd gen very clean and functional IMHO

3rd gen. I don't like all the soft lines and curves on the 4th gens, if I was to buy a 4th gen, however, it'd definately be a 98-02 (because of looks mainly, but the LS1 is an advantage too).

Thirdgens are the lightest of all fbodys 3k-3.2k lbs depending on what year. They are also very nice looking. I am down to around 3k lbs in my 89 and I still havent even started any major lightening, LS1 swaps in 3rd gens run 10's naturally aspirated just because of the weight of third gens and the LS1 motor probably weighs 100-200 lbs less then the stock thirdgen motors do. So your looking at 3k flat for weight just in LS1 swap.
And even just stock TPI 350s are torquey beasts, 345 ft lbs in my 89 aint too shabby lays out some good stretch of posi with little effort.
The only downfall to the TPI setup is the runner length 17 inches compared to 5 or 6 inches of the LT1, tpis run outta steam at higher speeds but can be modded easily.

I'd have to say 4th gens are my favorite. Obviously I don't hate 3rd gens either. 3rd gens are cheap and have great potential. I love mine as a daily car and future project, but the WS6's lines, power, and attitude take the cake hands down.

I have owned a 74 Firebird , two 75's (one TA and one Firebird), an 84 TA, a 91 Formula, and an 87 IROC. I currently own a 94 TA.
The 94 is by far the best DD type car, as it is the most comfortable, and has the most creature comforts, and has a softer ride. But working in a 4th gen engine compartment SUCKS. And with the leaf spring rear springs, driving a second gen car is like driving a truck IMHO.
If I could find a reasonally priced clean, low milage GTA with a 350 and t-tops, I'd be all over it. I looked long and hard for a GTA before I found a killer deal on my 94 TA. So, long story short, I'm a third gen fan. I also love the look of the SuperRam "pizza box" under the hood. And the aftermarket offers many other intake options to remove the dreaded "tuned port" intake restriction.

I have to go 3rd gen, but my dad has a 96 and i must say that thing feels a lot more beefy compared to my 91 (frame wise). My 3rd gen's frame feels like it was out of plastic compared to the newer 4th gens.
But i must say having a 430 rwhp ls1 in my 91 is a WHOLE lot of fun and i wouldnt trade it for anything.

Gotta go Thirdgen. My 1992 was the best thing that ever happened to me; even if i only had it a year
.
A thirdgen Iroc or Heritage looks better than any camaro out there (IMO). They handle the best outta the box, and have a real oldschool feel to them. Don't have many advances though. Gotta love the 4th gen for the modern interior and power, but a nice 3rd gen will turn more heads then a nice 4th gen....
