Default 63 impala ls2 & rear end strength

I got a 1963 impala with a ls2 motor 4l60e trans, the question is would the stock rear end be stronger enought to handle the ls2 swap with out breaking the rearend. i'm running with a 373 gear, 22inch tires, not racing but plan to hit it every so often. I just dont want to spend money twice

The X-frame cars use neither.

You "should" be fine with the stock axle, but it'd be wise to add some bearing cap girdles. The caps seem to be the first parts to break.

Well i know its 10 nuts i had to take off to get to the gears, a lowrider shop told me i may be fine if i go with racing axels since they never broke a rearend with hydraulics. then i was also told if i toy around to much and hard i could snap the rearend, so i'm un-sure what i should do. I want to do something fast since i'm doing my mock up for my frame off

As an owner of one of those cars I can say the gears are strong enough for daily use but the axles are the weak spot. Using a manual transmission and a heavy foot will make for short lived axles. However behind an automatic without a heavy foot they will be fine - if the axles themselves are good in the first place.

Save yourself the stress and either replace the axles, seals and bearings with new stuff or replace the entire housing with a stronger style housing.

If you are in the lowrider scene, I know a guy who does 9" rears for Impala's ready to install with or without a wishbone. PM me for details.

I'm on my 2nd stock rear in my 63 2 door hardtop with a small cammed 350 stock 700r4 3.55s and 15 inch wheels. It's a DD that gets an occasionally beating on the street and hasn't been to the track in almost 2 years I'd say now and I'm fixing to replace it again. I'm ditching mine when I do it and would suggest anyone else do the same.

I think i'm going spend the extra money, and get a 12 bolt or 9 inch. the only problem with that 9inch is the drive shaft will be off

The drive shaft will be off with any rear you choose. The only way the drive shaft will be the same is by using the same rear which still may not work because you are changing engines... right? I mean that IS why you're here...

I'm using custom engine mounts, transmission mount and custom drive shaft with a 9" in my car. I don't know if you have looked at a factory Impala drive shaft but I have seen pencils nearly that size - after market shafts use 4" tubes. If you want to get scared do a search on drive shaft frequency and theory then measure your factory drive shaft...

Don't forget to look at trucks, GM went to rear disks on the trucks sometime in the 90's

Do you still have the old 3.73 Center Section. If so, is it a P case? Would you sell it?
