1995 z28, ls1 4l60e swap
Im new here and this is my project. Quasar blue 1995 z28, 94,000 miles on body. no motor or trans, it was a race car, with no hvac or anything, core support was modified for turbo set up. I will be putting a ls1 and 4l60e in in. and makeing it mostly stock.
Let me know what you think.
I got the k frame out today, next I will be scuffing the engine bay and spraying it. Stock ls1 car k frame will be going in. still on the hunt for a ls1.
I cut out the modified core support, sanded and painted the engine bay, ripped apart the interior to fix the wiring and remove an alarm system. reisntaled a stock ls1 k member, rack and pinion and stock struts and springs from a ls1 car ( so the lt1 springs dont make the car look goofy with the alluminum block ls1) all that and got it back on the ground. After motor is in i will weld a stock core support back in that i got from a parts car i bought. I got the full heater system, fuel lines, center cousol, hvac stuff, and a bunch of other stuff i needed from the 94 parts cart i bought.
Pics
sanded
primer surfacer after being scuffed
base coat clear coat
the parts car that i bought and gutted
Motor: Ls1 from a wrecked 1999 Trans Am. 47K miles. All stock, Came with complete motor. both engine harness, and vehicle engine bay harness, ecm, maf, radiator, fans, aluminum drive shaft, instument cluster, full a/c set up with lines, air box and exhaust cut after the converters.
Transmission: Its a New GM 4l60E thats has about 1,500 miles on it, With a Precision industries 3500 billit front cover stall converter that came out of Alex's (Nasty Z) car.
just waiting
I have cleaned up my motor. Decided to delete the EGR, A.I.R system, and junk the cats and manifolds that came with the motor. I ordered a new set of long tube BBK headers with ORY, new plugs, oil/filter and a few other things.
Next the car didn't come with any HVAC, just a plate blocking off the big hole in the firewall. And I want Heat and A/C. So I got the full HVAC set up out of the 94 parts car I had. But to hook up the A/C the LS1 style A/C lines wont hook up to the LT1 style Evap core. And I didn't want to buy LT1 A/C lines because I already had the LS1 A/C lines. So I bought a new LS1 Style evap core, it took a little bit of creativity to seal it off in the box correctly, But it worked out sweet, and I got the HVAC in the car.
Also got the Auto pedals in, Air bag sensors, and Stock shifter. I had to rewire the neutral safety switch connector back on from my extra harness.
Next some wiring fun. The motor I bought came with the harness and was from and t56 car. So the Harness had no plug to run the 4l60e.
So luckily I got a 4l60e plug from a friend but with only about a foot of wire connected to it.
so I started going threw my extra harnesses looking for the correct color/size wire and add length, and then I will have to run the wires threw my harness and pin them into the ECM connectors.
Let me know what you think.

Car looks really good. I really like that fresh painted engine bay. Did you get any other suspension goodies with the car besides the tubular k-member? I wouldn't mind having one of those. Too bad you have to swap it out, but the LS1 should make it worth it.

Using conversion motor mounts ends up affecting header clearance, along with transmission mounting, and driveshaft length. I'm sure alot more stuff too, but those are the main problem areas.

The Merv has just started us a sticky (not sure it's made it to official sticky status yet?) in the "Conversions" section on here just for LT1 to LS1 swaps. Alot of good information in there as well as links to other build threads. Go check it out and link yours to it too.

Some progress here. Iv been working on this car and mostly my third gen I haven't had any time to take pics or post them.
I Finished converting my engine harness from manual trans to automatic (pinning in the 13 pin plug) actually I left all the wires and pins for the t56 the harness is now universal and if I wanted to swap to a t56 it would be plug and play pretty cool huh?
Also I finished making my lt1 engine bay harness a ls1 plug in harness. And re pinned the c220 and c210 under the dash to plug into the ls1 harness.
Here are some pics of the engine going in. Even with the core support cut out it was a VERY tight fit with the trans on. But me and my dad got it in after some thinking.
And here are some pics as it currently sits.
The harnesses are in along with the headers and some other things.
Let me say this. These BBK headers are the most easiest headers to install and have AWSOME clearances. VERY nice.
Let me know what you guys think.

More progress. I welded the core support pieices back in. For everyone that didnt know, the stock botum peice was very modified, and the top was cut out with another bar welded in. It was so the stock radiator stood up straight for room of the turbo. I cut the one I welded in from my parts car.
I love this welder!
After. I then re painted the core support and BAM, it looks like nothing was ever cut out.
Also installed my trans cooler, ac condensor, and radiator.
Then on the inside. I finished up my wiring, and installed the dash and the rest of the interior.
its almost there.
I hooked up power to the car and everything works, I even cranked it over a few times!
Now just need to do brake lines.
Fuel system.
trans lines.
And front bumper.
