Is their a way just to run an alternator?
Hey guys,
I'm building a 67 Chevy II with a ls1 and I have a few concerns. I'm running a manual rack so no need for a power steering pump. I would really like to run a standard rotation water pump which edelbrock sells but what are people doing for pulleys and brackets? I don't want to run any idler stuff or the f-body brackets. Basically I want a belt that goes around the water pump, harmonic, and then the alt. KRC makes a setup but it's ugly and costs $1500. Any ideas?
Thanks,
B

yes its simple. you could either do like in the pic or you can even run it without the lower idler pulley. when i did my first swap (no power rack) i did it without the pulley.

The solution RPD_Vette84 posted is your cheapest option if the low F body alternator postion works for your swap.
If you need to mount it higher, Kwik performance sells alternator only brackets. Price is reasonable compared to some other places.
I made a bracket for my swap, pics in my garage.

Thanks for the info guys. Here is basically what I want to do but I can't find the brackets to pull it off. I think I'm going to make some and see how it works. Of course this will only work with a standard rotation water pump. I'll keep you posted. Right now it looks like the Edelbrock pump has not been released yet but should be soon.

A few years ago there was a guy on here from I think Austrailia that had an LS motor in a Shelby knock off. He is running exactly the set up you want. However he machined his own water pump impeller to allow it to run backwards.
Looked pretty slick.
The guy had access to a full machine shop and some pretty good skills.

SilverZ,
Wegner Automotive Research makes a reverse rotation (reverse of the LSx) water pump for the LS motors in short and long shaft versions.

Awesome, Thanks for the help guys. I did see the article on the factory reverse water pump which was a cool conversion but way beyond my skill set. Plus, if I can just buy one that works for me. The speedway bracket does seem a little pricy but might work. I can't seem to find any dimensions on the Stewart pump from Wegner but I'll keep looking.
Thanks again,
B
