Default Truck waterpump converted to F-body.

I read a thread about drilling out the front of the truck pump for a Moroso 63544 pipe fitting but what was used to plug the existing hole in top once the water pipe is removed? The hole is 1.300" and is not a common freeze plug size. I can't find the thread now and i've done at least 1/2dozen searches. Pulley swapped is not an issue.

Just a note for guys trying to remove the pulleys, drill an tap them for a 3-bolt steering wheel puller. They come off without issue. To reinstall, heat the pulley to 400 degrees for 20 minutes minimum. Or remove the back cover and press it on against the impeller shaft. Thanks.

I did this also. I ended up just grinding the hole larger until the oversized frost plug that i bought would fit. Haven't had any troubles at all doing it that way.

see post 50 for pictures:

Funny you posted this. I just removed the outlet from my truck water pump and ordered a 1" NPT tap and a 1" to 1-1/4" hose nipple from Mcmaster Carr.

I wonder if a 1-5/16" (33.20mm) freeze plug would work? 1.300" is 33.02mm.

I was just going to take my water pump to the parts store and look through the books, and try and get lucky.

Are you guys using Teflon tape on the threads of the npt pipe fitting?

The only 1 5/16" freeze plug I have found is concave style and not a cup style plug. Never used a concave plug so I don't know how well it would work. It was suggested to use a 1 3/8" plug so I may try it. Definitely use teflon tape or paste sealant on threads. I'm thinking that the extra expense and trouble to do this out weighs an buying the f-body pump and a pulley swap so long as you already have an old truck pump.

I used thread sealant, but teflon tape should work fine as well.

I swapped the pulley on my pump, very easy. I put a nut on the truck pulley threads and used a puller to get the pulley off.

Then I used a power steering pulley puller to remove the LS1 pulley.

Then I used a shop press to press the truck pulley back on the LS1 pump. I removed the back cover and put a socket on the back of the pulley shaft to support the shaft. If this is not done the bearings and seals in the pump will be damaged.

I swapped the pulley too to get truck spacing with front port f body pump. However, mine needed other mods too, tapped 90 degree heater ports, and I wanted a mechanical fan. Seeing as water pumps are more prone to failure than a lot of other things, I would suggest an off the shelf item like the 2010 f body pump if possible. That way if it goes bad while driving through Roosterpuke, Arkansas, you can easily find another.
I actually made up a spare modded pump that I'll toss in the trunk for longer trips.

For the most part the issue is plugging the upper water inlet once it's pulled in favor of the thread in f-body style pipe. Thanks for the suggestions on pulley swap. I like the p/s puller trick. Did you grind a groove into the f-body pulley to accept the p/s puller adapter? Any of the f-body pulleys i've seen have a smooth snout. I saw both of the conversions while researching the freeze plug. Both nice work.

I will let everyone know about the freeze plugs from freezeplugwarehouse. Thank you.

Thought about that, but would like the inlet and outlet to be on passenger side to match up with my dual pass radiator.

Easier hose routing IMO.

Both truck pupms I had were junk yard pieces so I thought it would be better to buy a new LS1 pump from Auto Zone. It was around $100 and the pulley that came on it had the groove for p/s puller tool already in it. I tried to do the outlet mod like others are suggesting, I found it easier just to buy a water pump and swap the pulley. Someone earlier said, if it fails, when you are on a trip you have a to of mods to do to fix. With a pulley shop any small shop should be able swap a pulley with a little direction for you. I didn't even have to modify my heater hose outlets.
