Default 61 Bel Air L96 and 6L80

I am about to start my second LS swap. I got a 61 Bel Air 4 door for a family cruiser and need more then the straight 6 can give... I just picked up a 2010 2500 silverado for the powertrain. It has a L96 6.0L and a 6L80 6spd trans. The swap will prob take place next winter so I am going to start collecting parts and getting the engine ready..

is there a easy and cheap way to convert the 4wd 6L80 to a 2wd?

Is there a simple cam swap you can do to gain more power out of the L96? Possible LS6 cam??

I will have a lot more questions to come, but figured I'd start a thread now with a couple.. I never did start a thread on my truck....

Thanks
Trevor

A 6l80 might be tough to fit in an X frame car, they're big. Sounds like a cool project, got any pics?

re the cam swap, are you keeping VVT? I did w/my 2010 L96 and I went with the Mast HO cam. W/stock manifolds and catted 2.5" exhaust I had 385 RWHP/385Tq.

I will post pics when I get home for you guys.

I will be keeping the VVT...

I found a rear housing and tail shaft for $350 so will be ordering that soon. I am hoping the 6L80 is not to big to go in without to much cutting...

It is about the same length as a 700R4 but shorter than a 4L80. You can count on raising your transmission tunnel some. As long as you know that going in there will not be any surprises. Just plan on it.

Headers and a camshaft will up the horsepower quite abit.

I finished my 61 swap a month ago. I had a 700R4 in there before. Good luck fitting that 6L80E in there. You may want to reconsider, unless you're willing to replace the trans tunnel or have the trans sit low.

Default I 100% agree! be prepared for tunnel surgery.

I.m running 4L70 and it's much smaller than a 6L80e. I have zero clearance in the tunnel and did a major notch at the cross member.

Do a search in here for 61 Bel Air, my project will come up.

I'm now running a 4L70 as well, I might have 1/2" clearance in the worst areas. And that's with the engine 1.75" forward from stock.

Try giving a test fit before you buy another transmission. You might just have to split the tunnel and open it up a bit.

These are all test fit pictures. I hope some of the help you. I'm using dirty dingo mounts, with the engine all the way forward. The last pic, is basically how it sits now, although I have corvette covers for it.

I used an f-body pan, it fit almost perfectly, but you'll have to "shape" the x-member a bit. My dad and I just heated the x-member where the corners of the oil pan lay, and dimpled it enough with a piece of pipe and a hammer. We also raised the mounts, but had we dimpled the x-member more, we wouldn't have had to. Raising the engine did give us perfect pan clearance, which is a bonus.

BTW, I'm using a modified f-body master/booster. We just cut the coil pack mount off, mounted it directly to the valve cover and turned it 90 degrees to get clearance.

Which F-Body pan, the 1998-2002 or the 2010 up? I can't see enough in your pictures to tell.

I used a GM Muscle Car pan on a 63 and cut the bottom (PITA) and wanted to a different route next for my car.

I have the same combo going into my project.
I will be running the 6L80 in my porject car but I am lucky, I'm making the floor as I go. That is 1 big *** transmission. Your swap is looking good

The '98-'02 fit almost perfect once you modify the front crossmember in the two locations he mentioned. The last one I did for a friend, I cut it out and welded in a small notch, rather than just hammering it down, but he didn't take the front clip off and only wanted to put the engine in once, so I made sure there was plenty of clearance.

I haven't made a build thread yet, too lazy. Car looks good. It'll be nice to see another 61 rollin around 780.

I just ordered the GM muscle car swap LS oil pan kit. It was only $150.00. I have a LS6 intake and I can't decide weather I want to use it... Even if I put it on the alternator will still stick up to high.. On my truck I used the truck intake and just cleaned it up and painted it..
