Default 280z swap, solid axle question

Just bought a solid 1976 280z roller and planning to do forced induction LS/t56 restomod. I had a question about the rear axle. I want to run a solid rear, probably a Ford 9" with a 4 link setup. I don't really care that much about the handling, just want a bulletproof setup. I know this has been done before, mostly in drag cars. I looked around to see if any vendors offered a 4 link setup for the S30, but couldn't find anything. So I am assuming I will have to adapt a universal kit. Has anyone done this? I asked on hybridZ but haven't gotten much feedback.

Specific questions/comments:

1) does anyone sell a 4 link for this car?

2) has anyone had luck adapting a 4 link kit?

3) I understand there will be fabrication required, but would like to avoid backhalf/ tube frame

4) does a solid axle require notching of the frame rails to allow for stock or lower ride height?

5) pics of solid axle setups?

6) other considerations?

Thanks!

The problem with cars like yours is there isn't that much frame structure to tie a 4-link to. You might need to build a subframe.

Thanks for your comments. I am willing to build supporting structure, just looking for advice/experience on the best way to accomplish and recommend parts/methods.

Thanks

http://www.cachassisworks.com/c-1941-rear-clips.aspx

Chassis works has a lot of options for rear clips.

There are also more durable options if you want to retain the IRS.

I've seen this done on several Z cars. I've never heard of a kit, it isn't a very common swap, every swap I've seen was a custom hand built job. In fact, most were very well executed swaps

Hybridz used to be my favorite place on the internet but it isn't what it used to be. There should, however, be some write ups of solid read axle cars. My suggestion would be to find a solid rear swap on there and PM the guy who did it.

I will also add the swaps I can remember involved pretty extensive metal work. Not much room under a 280z.

Thanks for the comments. Are people having much success with the IRS? I've seen a lot of threads where the axles let go. Also the fact that apparently people are still looking for the perfect solution didn't give me a lot of confidence. I'm looking for 600+ to the wheels.

Thanks

The IRS has run low 9's reliably. Stub axles and half shafts are the issue, not the diff itself

I can appreciate that the diff itself is plenty strong. But the system is only as strong as it's weakest link. Also, why are a lot of people swapping 8.8s in?

1. Cheap
2. Huge supply
3. Almost as strong as a 9"

Easier to source LSD and gears for an 8.8. Also some people just always want more. I've read of a limited number of guys doing IRS 8.8 swaps from Cobras. That seems like an interesting upgrade.

I'm not a fan of the r230 swap. Seems like a lot of work, expense and weight compared to what an R200 gives you. The R200 can be made to go, no questions about that. But bench racing being what it is people always think they need more.

Tires are also a huge part of the equation. Stock fenders severely limit tire width, sort of a natural driveline saver. Going solid rear usually means tubbing the rear allowing serious meat.

Go on over to HybridZ.org and read up, it is less active these days but there is loads of great info specifically related to that chassis over there.

Here are a couple of popular half shaft kit. The second link has stub axles that will remove your weak link worries. I have adapter flanges to use the I think ZX turbo half shafts with upgraded 280z stub axles
