Here is a question for you..

If that LQ4 had a 4L80E on the back of it originally and you removed that Spacer, did keep the same Starter that was originally on it?
What kind of Transmission are you using?

From what I can tell, I think you kept the original Starter for the 4L80E setup.

Go get yourself a Starter for a 5.3l Truck Engine and try that if you are using anything else besides the 4L80E.

when you hit the starter, the gear should kick out into the flywheel-if it doesnt, the "bendix" is bad maybe-i thought most of the starters were the same, the flywheel teeth end up in about the same distance from the block, providing correct flywheels, spacers are used
but you need to ck that the sterter gear is moving outward

The spacer was only used with only one of the automatic transmissions (cant remember, 4L80 or 4L60). Your crank is definitely the short one if it's an 03.
I dont remember there being a spacer on my flexplate when I removed it.
I just bolted up an 02 LS1 flywheel to my 02 LQ9. I used the Escalde starter, it is on but I have not tried to crank it yet. I'll hook up a battery and see if it engages later today.
There may be starter differences with vs without the spacer.

^^I'm thinking that you will need to find a Starter from a 5.3l Engine, you might have better luck..

That doesn't make any sense.. it should line up.

I'm using a 2002 Block, and I had a Camaro Starter on it with no problems for my Auto setup, and I see the T56 setup going on just as smooth.

Maybe your Starter is messed up..

I just checked mine. 02 Escalade 6.0 block and crank, and starter, no spacer on the crank, aftermarket LS1 flywheel.
The starter engages fine.
Before you do anything, remove the starter and make sure the gear pops out when engaged.

LQ4's with the 4L80E had the spacer only. The LQ9 will not have the spacer because they came with 4L65E's. The starters should be the same however. I bet the "bendix" is bad.

If you have a bad bendix do I just have to replace the starter or can it be fixed?

Giving the starter the benefit of the doubt being as how it hasnt been used ina good while.. (over a year) I got under there and tried to see if I could loosen it up some. It stopped whining but my batter is to dead to see if its working now. I'll see if I cant get her going tomarrow.

Well I decided before i go ahead and get a new starter that I try and see if I cant get it to "pop out". I messed with it some but now instead of spinning it just does nothing.. maybe I have it wired up wrong? I pretty much just have the batter hooked up to the positive side and the starter is grounded to the block and the other side i have a cranking power signal going to the solenoid..

Sounds like your bypassing the cars wiring, correct?
If so, the starter has 2 terminals. The large one is connected to the battery. It's hot all the time and actually spins the starter. The smaller one activates the solenoid, engages the gear, and activates the starter motor. It's only hot when you crank the engine. You need to supply power to both terminals to test it.

Hey im working on a 2002 6.0 that has the spacer on the crank. Does that spacer just pull out or am I going to need a new flywheel for a 6.0? I didnt remeber the back of the cranks being different till I got it in the car woops. Anyway let me know if that crank spacer is a pull off deal.

If you're going with a manual trans/flywheel, lose the spacer. It's only used for automatic flexplates.
