You need either a BCM from a donor car or a VATs box that makes the 50hz square wave single the PCM is looking for. With out one or the other the PCM will not fire the injectors. They sell them on ebay regularly. If you would rather make your own I can explain how. It can be made for less than $10 of radio shack components. That is what I did
As far as emission you can get rid of everything except the front O2's but you will throw some codes without reprograming. I haven't had reprograming done to mine yet and it seems to run just fine.( No emissions except the front O2's). The SES light is on, but doesn't see to effect how it runs.

I used the second circuit and calculator on this page http://home.cogeco.ca/~rpaisley4/LM555.html#2

The values I used are 3900 ohms for R1 22000 ohms for R2 and .6 Micro farads for C1 punch them in and you will see you get about 50 Hz with a 54% duty cycle
Here is a picture of the circuit http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-...99/vatsmod.jpg

It works on 5V which is what the PCM is looking for you would need to check the pin out for your particular PCM but most gray wires are 5V

I used the stock harness and modified it where necessary. Not that much is needed. I blended the two harnesses together (the one for the LS1 and the one that was original to the car)

What exactly does the bcm control? I am putting a 2001 ls1 in a 98 v6. Can i use the bcm from the v6 with the ls1 harness?

The BCM controls allot of things, interior lighting, delayed accessory power, door locks, keyless entry, and alarm to name a few.. Let me look in my manuals to see if they are the same in a V6. I do know instead of VTD fuel enable it controls the starter relay instead, but maybe it can be made to do that instead. It is located on the heater under the dash on the passenger side.

I have the bsm from the donor , how does this help if i dont have the original key? I do however have the steering column and ignition from the donor as well.

Not having the key makes it much harder.... There are 15 different possibilities
They are Key number Resistor reading in Ohms

1 392
2 523
3 681
4 887
5 1.13k
6 1.47k
7 1.87k
8 2.37k
9 3.01k
10 3.74k
11 4.75k
12 6.04k
13 7.50k
14 9.53k
15 11.80k

Do you have the VIN for the car the BCM came out of. Maybe a dealer could look up the key and chip number for you.

Sorry I haven't looked at my manuals yet... I have been watching the cubs 6 to 6 in the 7th.... Go Cubs!

just use the vats bypass, using a bcm is useless. if you have the pcm you have the vin from the doner car, just gotta go down to the dealer and have them read it.

modifing the harness is cake with the manuals, you can even go to the dealer and maybe they will let you print out what you need, all gm service manuals are online now.

stand alone harness's cost 450-700 dollars, you can modify yours for 5 bucks and some time.

I just tried it last night. It works! I finally started my car after two months. I believe you can buy the key, key remote(key less entry), and bcm from the dealership. With the bypass kit i dont think your key less entry will work. The bcm's are the same from v6 to v8 from 98 to 02. When you plug in you bcm dont forget to reset you key less entry remote; hold down the lock and unlock button for 7 seconds(the doors will lock and unluck and horn will beat).

There's a number from 1-15 on the body of the ignition switch if you have it out of the column. It should corespond to the resistance value of the key. (I had an ignition switch go bad on an '86 Corvette with the only key that I had stuck in the switch... that was not a fun day. The car was running when the switch failed and I had to disconnect the battery to turn the car off.)

Edit: I just noticed that this was an old thread that someone brought back...
