Default engine wiring harness of choice??? list here please...

o/k so i've done some searching around the forums and havent really seen a stand out engine harness of choice used in swapping an LS1 into a different chassis.

are the typical $600-$700 harnesses really worth it??? WTF??

i swapped a TPI injection onto my 355 in my 72 pickup and the harness was $375 with a chipped ECU!!!

now i know the ease of install is apparent, (i really liked just hooking up the wires and starting my TPI first try) but what are the alternatives and cost differences? would i be able to mod/hack my stock harness easily enough to consider doing it? and what's involved in re-wiring the stock harness?

for reference i'm swapping a 99 LS1/T56 out of a camaro into my 97 kouki 240SX. i'm on a budget (obviously) and am not afraid to do custom work.

thanks for the help, build progress pics/thread to come. just got the engine last week and tore it down for cam install and pump/gasket replacements...

I think this kind of question pops up at least once a month.
A lot of people will tell you to save the money and do it yourself, especially if you are on a budget.
I say to decide 1 way over another is all personal.
1. If the harness you have is in good shape (not burned or cut to bad) then no reason not to use it.
2. If you don't mind where the computer is going to end up with the stock harness, there again, no reason not to use it.
3. If you can't afford or don't want to pay for a new harness, you could do the work yourself to your own harness, or send it off to a company to have it modified for your needs.
4. If none of the above apply, then a new harness may be well worth it. To someone making a custom car, who wants to put the computer in a specific location, who doesn't feel like trying to figure it out themselves, or who just plain has the money, and doesn't want to spend the time to do it themselves, a new harness with all the bells and whistles of a custom length, fuel pump relay, fan relays, A/C functions, and whatever else you want might just be worth it. If it wasn't, I wouldn't think so many companies would be out there doing it.

I have always used the harness that came with the engine.

If I could find a harness for my engine (2007 LMG), I would use it. It is really easy to modify a stock harness to a stand alone.

sorry for the newb question, yeah i'm a newb damnit.

not a newb to working w/ wiring though.

thanks for the replies guys. are there any decent DIY guides? link would be appretiated.

my harness is in very good shape but i don't know where the OEM fan relays were connected? i can re-use the fuel pump and ignition relay in the 240 so that's no prob.

Use the stock harness; like as is said above, it is not necessary to modify it unless you can not fit it into your chosen spot in the engine bay. For stuff you don't use, like rear O2 sensor plugs or EGR plug, just tie them up out of the way. Leaving them in the harness eliminates any chances of breaking a needed wire when removing un-used wires.

I bought an engine w/o the wiring harness, and then called jesse at www.wait4meperformance.com to see what would fit. He gave me a list of what to look for, went to my local salvage yard and got the brain box and harness for 150 bucks. Sent it off to him, he will reprogram the puter and rework the harness for whatever you need/want for 360 bucks and ship it bakc to you, total turn around time is about 8-10 days. Great thing is that any time I want the computer reflashed, I just pay for shipping and let him know whats done to it, and he takes care of it. Just thought I'd throw his name out there as he's a pretty cost effective and good guy. If you don't want to go that route, there is a man in colorado on fleabay that does the harness custom as well, he wants 450 for it, but that way you won't have to go buy one. hth

I wanted to mount the PCM under the dash instead of the engine compartment so had John at Speartech make a harness that was longer than the stock harness. I was extremely satisfied with the quality and fit. He also reprogrammed the PCM. Once everything was properly connected, the engine fired up immediately, with no fault codes and ran perfectly.
