Little update here guys...I got a stock 4.6 kmember in the car, new steering rack, I have new shocks and struts for the car, and new springs and upper and lower rear control arms are on the way. I also picked up a set of modified 4.6l mounts that are ready for an LS1! I can't wait to get this baby done! Next step is probably line lock install and fuel system...

I think this is a cool swap, and am kinda surprised there isn't more ready info on it, double cheap someone hasn't published a book on this, there will be great tips in a complete book if there is one, plus it would save a ton of time, money and headache, good luck and be sure to post pics throughout the build.
#1 The 5.3 can make great power with simple mods and run right with the 5.7s. Hell, you can turn a 5.3 into a 5.7 with a crank change and bore. Those motors work well the z06 cam and right there you a great streetable combo. Nothing wrong with using a 5.3 if your trying to save money and not wanting to make 1000hp.

So I am guessing that swapping a ls1 / t56 combo into my 96 4v cobra would be fairly easy? I could retain my stock k member and mounts, just modify them?

Yes you can retain the stock k-member and just modify the mounts...

Update: The car is rolling again, it got a new steering rack, tierod ends, ball joints, sway bar end links, shocks/struts, upper/lower rear control arms, and h&r sport springs. Next up are brake/fuel lines and fuel pump.

I'll give this thread a bump! I finally got a motor (5.3 from an 04 silverado, 50k miles). I'm putting an ls6 intake on it, possibly an aftermarket cam. Gonna try to get it test fitted in the car soon.

Keep us posted on progress. I'm in the buying stage for my '01 Mustang right now. Where did you buy your motor from?

P.S. I'm in Whitehall only about 15(?)miles from you, would like to see this when it's done. Good luck,Mark.

I got the motor at Chuck's auto salvage in Douglassville. His prices were reasonable. You should be able to find some motors there on carpart.com or mypartshop.com

I wish it was the other way around. They should just have a kit w/ a bellhousing and **** so you can use a cable clutch. That way you can use the stock clutch pedal.

I got the 5.3 dropped in for a test fit. I think I'm going to stick w/ the truck oil pan, its only about 1.25" lower than my kmember. I'm in the process of gathering cheap fbody front accessories. I have the water pump and alternator, also picked up an ls6 intake.
