I have a 69 Camaro its pretty much a full project..
I am planning on going with all new parts (probly dse subframe..frame off resto..6 speed t56 tranny..)

Ive done some research not all the way but the engine it has seems to be the original to the car..its from a 69..one of the few that the z28 offered..the vin shows ca. built v8..other than that i dont know if its ss or z28factory daytona yellow..

Should i keep this engine take it to a machine shop go through it all new internals fully built fresh?? and put a fuel injection system connected to a t56

or grab a LS engine from a f body gto or corvette???

List your cons and pros

 

if it's a factory z/28 i would either reuse the stock block, sell the car for a less desireable one, or put the block in the corner and do some other sbc

on the other hand if you don't have hard proof of what the car is, have a field day with it and do whatever, including a lsx swap

I just wouldn't butcher a factory z/28 car when it would be so easy to get my hands on a clean "worthless" car plus cash instead to do what I wanted

 

If the engine partial vin matches the car and it's something special like an SS or RS/SS, than there is some incentive to restore. If it's a plain jane, not so much. Pro touring camaros are pulling very good resale numbers lately.

Either way, you should build the car the way you want and enjoy it.

I have a 69 rs/ss, but I don't have the original engine so I decided to go pro touring with an lsx engine, ls1 12 inch brakes, and so on

 

The Z/28 only offered one engine, in '69 it was the 302. If it is the original DZ motor, your best option would be restore it to original.

 

I am more convienced its not the original engine i didn't find the partial vin yet with the engine in the car...the engine #is v0409TJD
the t from my research is a truck engine and from a 1974...

the engine numbers are 3970010 that came in some 69 camaros.

 

There should be a partial vin (the last numbers of the car vin) next to the V0409TJD, but I'm guessing it is not an original motor. 3970010 is probably the most common block casting number out there.

 

Almost impossible to verify an LA Camaro as a z28 without the VIN matched DZ motor.

Norwood cars had X codes on the trim tag (Z28 = X33 or X77). Sadly LA cars did not.

The pros of an LSX: bolts in via aftermarket parts, more power potential per $, lighter weight on the front end = better balanced car.

Cons: easier to stay stock.....

 

Can you post a good picture of the cowl tag?

 

If it ends up being an original DZ 302 restore that thing and keep it as a retirement investment, If not go SBC. Parts for SBC are CHEAP! Im talking forged crank 400 bucks type of cheap. LSX are cool but you just cant beat old school carbureted goodness!

 

I 2nd that ... I love my ls but I'm building a big inch BBC ... nothing cooler ... and sbc are cheap ... but it's all what you like ... don't let anyone dictate your car, it's yours, make it how you want it

Like todays camaro a v8 engine is either a z28 or ss
in 69 was this the case?? or did GM made camaros v8 without it being z28 rs or ss???

 

 

Yes,you coul'd get a plain camaro with a v8.Can't tell anything about the cowl tag info you posted.Does it have an x code?It will be on the trim tag under the hood,if it has that it makes it easy to identify.If not then it gets a lot harder.If it is a z28 with x code it will be an x33 or an x77.You probably need to post an actual picture of your trim tag and someone can decode it for you.

 

Your camaro is a 69 v8 coupe,built in Van Nuys calif. the 1st week of january.It was daytona yellow with black vinal interior.The only thing left is the accsessory codes in the lower righthand corner.I think I have these somwhere I will see if I can find them.Somone may have them handy.

 

Its still a great car being a 69, but bad luck the car is not a Norwood Ohio built car. These ran X codes from late 68 which enabled the car to be more accurately ID'd. LA never ran X codes.

The 69 was available with 307, 327 and 350 in the plain jane cars depending when in the model year the car was built. 307 discontinued end of 68. Your car being Jan 69 would have been built with a 327 or 350.

Does it have disc brakes on the front, or front and rear?

10 bolt or 12 bolt rear end?

SS had 350 and a choice of three different 396's.

There was also a 427 available by special order. These are rare as rocking horse doo doo. (The COPO cars).

RS could be optioned on any car.

There were also a couple in line 6's available on bases. These could be identified as the VIN would start with 123 vs 124 for a V8 car.
