Default e38 pwm cooling fan control

Could anybody tell me how to operate my single fan, single speed, single relay cooling fan using the pwm (pulse width modulation) signal from my E38 ECM. Is it possible, or do I have to redesign my cooling system. I was told that the ECM supplied a ground so I wired the relay up for that. I now know that the ECM supplies a pwm signal, but don't know what to do with that. The tune allows me to adjust temps and % power (from 0 to 100). Thanks, Gary

Could you use the corvette cooling module and get a variable speed? Does it require a special fan motor. thanks

You have to buy the harness for the fan controller. Then you will need a 12124685 connector to plug into it, one cavity will be heavy gage wire to battery power, one to ground and one small ~20-gage wire to pcm.

With the proper state diagram you do not need a fan module. The ECM will just ground the relay like the older 411 ECMs.

True but you wont have the functionality of the variable speed.

Thanks for the advice gentleman. I think it would be advantageous to have to
have the variable speed and pwm is a very efficient way to do this.

I can confirm what juced211s said. I've got an E38 that's operating two fans with PWM. It's so easy to make this work it's ridiculous. You just need the module and the correct connector.

All I did was wire the + and - from the module to both fans, so they'll both run whatever percentage is commanded by the PCM. I put a 60A fuse inline on the + into the module to protect the electronics. 60A should be more the two 11" Spals I'm running should ever draw combined, and with the nature of PWM being what it is, the current spike on initial turn on isn't a worry.

I've had the fans up to 100% using the bidirectional controls on my HPTuners Scanner without a hitch. It's pretty cool to play with, as you can hear the fans speed up and down with a mouse click. In day to day running, I've rarely even heard the fans, as they never really hit close 100% even when it's 110*.

I checked with my dealer and he could not find the fan harness listed separately. It does come with the fan assembly.
Anyone have a part # or know if a pigtail is available?
thanks

Where do you get the fan module? Does it take the PWM signal from pin 17 on X1?

Fan control module would be from GM (if you are trying to use a PWM signal). Pin is X1 58 on E38.

Has anyone sourced the module connector, aside from complete fan assemblies? Appears to be p/n 09-4401-94 but can't find it anywhere.

The Bosch module is used on other brands but yards refuse to sell the connector even when purchasing the module. From pictures the pins appear to be same orientation, unclear if the connectors interchange. Unknown if the PWM control scheme is the same for other makes.
