Default 6L80E in a G-body?

Will it fit? Is a certain adapter kit needed? I'm starting to do my homework!

No adapter needed, but the trans tunnel will need major surgery! The 6L80 is an incredibly deep and wide transmission. I am putting one in an A body, and spent all this weekend fabricating a new tunnel for mine. The trans is also much deeper from the center-line of the output shaft to the bottom of the pan than earlier transmissions, so the pan will hang down more, no matter what! Suprisingly, I was able to use the original crossmember from the Chevelle and it even lined up with one of the sets of holes in the frame.

It will be all worth it when I am done, and can't wait to run the paddle shifters through their paces.

Regards, John McGraw

I too would like to see this done..

I'd sell my freshly rebuilt T56 and buy one and do the work if anyone would be interested in my manual..

A 6L80 is a lot bigger than a 4L80E

I wouldn't waste time with it, a nicely built 4l80e would probably handle whatever you toss at it.

I had to massage mine to fit the T56...the 6L80E is huge compared to it, would take alot more work.

On my '65 Buick Skylark we new ahead of time what we had to do. Mainly cut out the tunnel and raise it about 1-1.25". So if you know going in what the problems are it is not bad at all.

From my own research and measurements, the rule of thumb is: If you can fit a T-56 AND a 4L80 in the space available, then a 6L80 (maybe 6L90) will fit." The T56 covers the tall centerline aspect of the 6L80/90, the 4L80 covers the wide centerline aspect.

From what I recall, the A-body pan is slightly lower/narrower than a G-body as it was a pre metric O/D transmission design. As I've seen/heard the T56/4L80 will pretty much interchange in anything '80's and newer with little or no massaging, the 6L80/90 should be a slip fit. This of course depends entirely upon whose motor mounts kit you use.

I have a feeling that this is going to be another topic that will depend on the owner's engine placement and how much you are willing to let hang out below the car..

Mine will not be lowered.. it will be stock heightish so i don't have to worry about ground clearance.. I didn't have to touch my trans tunnel for my T56.. It is close but it clears.. I am also currently using the truck oil pan with no issues..
