Well I am now very proficient working with an LS1wire harness.
unfortunately that was not the problem. I have to only assume that the guy I purchased the engine from truly did not know what was wrong with it.
compression test results:
cyl 8 90 psi cyl 7 10 psi
cyl 6 0 psi cyl 5 120 psi
cyl 4 125 psi cyl 3 120 psi
cyl 2 130 psi cyl 1 115 psi
looks like i am going to have to find another engine. I am going to do a leak down test on 6, 7 and 8 later to see if it is valves or rings.

OUCH!
Dont give up your getting close! keep up the great work!

I just did the leak down on number 7. sounds like the intake valve. Guess I will just pull the head tonight or tomorrow and see.
anyone have documentation or a book for LS1 rebuilds?
I hope its just valve work.

I am going to pull the valve covers tonight, remove the rockers on the bad cyl's, check the push rod lengths then with the rockers off I can see if the valves close all the way. From that point I will put the compression gauge back on and hand crank the engine to see if I pick up the compression.
- If the valves close all the way it is not a bent valve
- If then once I hand crank it over I have compression it is not the piston/rings
- Then it would be the rod length or lash adjustment.
any one of the above steps will indicate my path from here.
well I just read a similar story from this site where the engine was slapped together missing some rings just to sell it.

Well, I needed a new rack to hang my tools. Now I have to pull the front engine cover and oil pump to see why I am getting a new hanging rack. should be fun. I might go see New Era about valves and "stuff" for the heads tomorrow.

well, i think you found the issue...If you're strapped for cash I'd check in the classifieds here first, lots of guys feel your pain and offer great deals...It's really difficult to put this particular project together without getting burned...trust me. I spent 18 months getting my 911 LS swap on the road.
But it is worth it finally seeing the guy next to you at the light just shrink in his seat in intimidation no matter what they're driving. There's a local gallardo, ford gt, and ttC6 all unwilling to throw-down once they hear the chunky LS in the back of the 911...Priceless.
Best of luck to ya and don't lose hope.
Also, sport bike guys lose the attitude quick

Thanks for the advice and words of encouragement. This is frustrating. All I need now is a good set of heads or a valve job to get the car on the road.

My timing chain looked just like that with 34K on it. I bought a new single roller chain to install with my cam job and honestly it seemed to be just as loose as the stock chain was. Runs flawlessly. Glad you got a set of heads on the way, this is an awesome build and look forward to seeing some videos of it when its running. Good luck with everything

well I tested the fuel pressure and it came up way low. pulled the fuel filter and sent fuel direct had way to much pressure.
so the issue is the filter with return I choose.
what filter with fuel to tank return should I use?

The engine is running strong. now on to cooling it.
it is a firebird radiator. I an almost done with the shrouding. tomorrow I am going to ru the hoses to the back and finish the system.
Hopefully by the endog the day tomorrow i will be drivable.
