Default LS Mustang Coupe

I joined up for reading about others who have done the swaps and to see what I need. I have an 88 Mustang coupe that I am rebuilding. I am bouncing between doing an LS2 or LS3 with some minor mods to keep the issues down, going all out and doing a built LQ9/4 with a supercharger or twin turbo's. The other thing is that it will be driven on the street as a grudge car, but am unsure of the best way to go for a transmission. I would like to keep it with the T56 if possible. I can get GM crate motors at cost for a dealership with some connections. Any advice or suggestions are appreciated. From what I have read, Speartech has a good stand alone harness and Kooks or Dynatech make good sets of headers. I am also planning on going with the AJE K-Member. Here are some pics of the coupe. I will post up progress as it comes along..

Looks good thus far. If you plan on boost, then the LQ4 is more desirable vs. the higher comp. LQ9 Quit typing and start wrenchin LOL

I am not sure on which way I want to go. I figured a H/C LS2/3 will fit under a stock hood and will be a sleeper compared to having the cowl hood. I am working on it though.. Just pulled the rear and the brake system out for something new.

The LQ4 doesn't need a cowl hood if you switch from the truck intake to the car style. I did this to my '89 Mustang. My test fit was with an '00 Z28 SS intake, but the LS6 version is no taller, likewise for the F.A.S.T. version. My test fit was with the truck oil pan at 1/2" above the steering rack, which was in the stock location.

I know the motor will fit under the stock hood, but depending on what setup for the turbo/SC I would go with would make the decision on that.

Thanks guys.. I just picked up an Aeromotive sumped tank that will be going in as well. I have a full Aeromotive return setup in my 03 Whipple, and I am following along those lines. I just want it people to look at it and not think twice about it being "Just another cammed 302." I still have to finish figuring out which would be the best way..

Nothing done after the rear was picked up this morning. Christmas decorations, cleaning, and putting spare parts up in the attic took my day. The tanks will be swapped tomorrow and I'll start on the interior. Any input as to which motor from anyone... H/C LS3?

If you want to stick with fuel injection the LS3 is a hell of an engine. If I were you I'll get a nice custom cam(matching valvetrain) and a thinner head gasket to raise the compression. Change the intake to a better one and of course a nice exhaust system!

Stock LQ4 add L92's carb and cam. 10/1 pump gas motor.
Here is what you get, all motor.

Damn, I go looking for a dyno sheet and all I get is a video of a pass down the strip.

That is a problem with some guys, they get fixated on rear wheel dyno numbers.
Fortunately we don't race dyno's.
My ride has smoked many 500RWHP rides at the strip.
The car weighs 2900lbs with me in it, do the math, real world data.
Pump gas 10/1, factory parts in the 9's and you want dyno numbers, thats funny right there!

what do you have electronics wise to run with a carb? i've always worked with fuel injection stuff, never tried a carb but im playing with the idea of running one.

I would agree, except that now there's no telling how much is the engine, and how much is everything else, from the trans to the atmospheric conditions. With dyno results, every variable is eliminated or specified and accounted for. Lots of parts combinations can run high 9s in a perfect chassis and good weather, so this still doesn't prove very much. For this to be helpful, all the other info needs to be specified, from converter stall to barometric pressure. Quicker, cheaper and easier to do on a dyno than travel to a track, sit in the lanes, go through tech, and so on.

I know from the carb idea is what brought me to this base idea, that there is a kit that has the carb, intake, a set of COP's and an MSD standalone box. Not exactly sure what the best parts are, but there is something like that and it is completely standalone.
