Default in search of 11's N/A

i tried posting this in the newbie tech but didnt get much response, so im trying here.....

Ok, so im new to the ls1 game. Just about a month and a half ago, i purchased a ls1 longblock out of a 2002 T/A with a broken head bolt for cheap

I stripped the engine bay in my 96 v6 mustang and then just sat on the idea for the past month.

well tis past week, i came across a complete ls1 out of an 02 T/A as well, with wiring and computer too.

for $1,100!!

60k miles

as figured, it has a ls6 intake and when i brought it home i searched the block number and found it to be an ls6 block!!

so now to my question, im looking for low 11's on motor and mid 10's on a 150 shot of juice.
is this attainable?

my planned mod list:

1 3/4 351 swap LT's
ls6 intake (obviously)
ported TB
4.10's
cam
stall
weight reduction
sticky tires
aftermarket rear control arms

so is this good enough? im guessing the car will weigh in at around 3200-3300
it wont be exactly a daily, but i do want it to be reliable on the street..

for cam and stall, i was thinking in the lines of a Trex and a 4000 stall

but i know there must be better options

on a side note, i was able to modify the stock 3.8 mounts to work with the ls1. just need some minor adjusments for alignment

My 93 coupe runs 11.80-.60s depending on the temp outside. To give you an idea of how quick you car should be my combo is:

98 motor/4L60e
TSP225 cam
Comp 918s
Yank ST3500
3.73 gear
1 3/4 headers, 2 1/2 exhaust

Good luck with your project!

BTW if you are interested i have a PT4400 converter for sale, its too loose for my combo.

MS3 cam
supporting valve train
4.10s (if a 6 speed, 3.73s if a auto)
good suspension
find some PRC 2.5 5.3 or ls6 heads
and a stall

I've been looking at the ms4 since it's similar to the trex, but does the ms3 offer a wider powerband?

well if you get new ported heads, the ms4 will be fine so would the trex or the texas speed "giant" cam. However on stock heads, the ms3 would be better.

Whats your mustang weigh? A4 or m6?

Well, after some weight reduction I'm hoping for around 3200-3300 race weight. I'll be running a 4l60e/4l80e, stall , and most probably 4.10's

Oh and to start off I would be leaving the stock heads on, and then down the road adding some 243's. Trying to keep it semi-budget fir now so I can get it running soon...

Well you won't be reducing any weight with the 4l80E at all.... Even though conceptually the 4l80e is the tuffer unit of the 2 that can handle more torque in its stock form... The problem is the damn thing is just so bulky and heavy..... 100+ pounds more than a TH350,Th400

Here are some comparisons of ratings:

TH350 157lbs
4L60/4L65-E 160/176lbs
TH-400 190lbs
4L80-E 260lbs

So if weight reduction is the goal, you won't be doing it with the 4L80E
If budget is the goal forget about it... The converter for the 4l80E is atleast $600-$700 min......
I just don't trust reving up a motor with and adapter on the nose oe the converter and flexplate... You will need a flexplate too for the 4l80E since their converters are 6 bolt....

PS one option is to have a converter made 4l80E tranny side/ 4l60E tranny side.... but I would be suspect of the duribility..

Aslo on the valve train loss issue and just for conversation... A lot of die hard racers use TH350 do to less parasitic loss vs even a TH400..... But the rule of thumb is that the TH400 is a stuffer unit, but a well built TH350 will handle the power....

Don'tget me wrong the 4l80e has its place.......

The other thing to notice is the gear spread..... Some guys do not like the first gear of the 4l60's and the gear spread......

Some like the 4l80e gear spread.....

So with everything there are trade offs and compromises......

Just wondering because I am going with the 80 and the trans does indeed feel pretty heavy, 2 guys to lift it for sure. When I picked it up we took the converter off and when I picked it off the ground I was surprised how heavy just the converter partially filled was...at least 40lbs (but that is the only converter I have ever picked up) so was wondering if that weight needed to be added to the above number or if it is included.

I would imagine that is the weight with the converter.... Stock form... I have never heard that it was lighter with another converter..... The facts on the weight is that it is 100lbs heavier than the other auto trannys

What's your race weight?

I dont remeber the weight. It is an original 4cyl car with manual windows, it does have ac & pc though. I would guess 3100-3200 lbs.
