So it is definitely heavier than a ls1 miata.

What axles are you gonna use with the new diffy?
How strong is the new diffy? Looking at options for my black and red cars.

You can get them in the 24-2600 range if you use light wheels, aluminum block, and cut some stuff off. The 240's are easier to do though, because they weigh less to begin with.

You use the inner CV's from the q45, only on both ends. So you need a diff, mounts, and two pairs of axles, and custom shorter axles.

As far as strength, they're pretty good. Most people do just fine with this setup. (10's or better) at that point, the stub axles are the weak link. where does it end lol?

Does anyone make axle stubs for the S30s? Us Z31 guys are stuck with one-offs if we want something that doesn't break.

There's a guy who has a manufacturer. Problem is they're about 700 bones for a pair, then you need the companion flanges, which are 400, and the z31T housing and axles, plus a pair of shorter axles, which is 500, and then you have to have a new driveshaft made

So for the budget price of 1600+ a stock z31T diff and axles, you can have something that won't break!

Well just as I thought i was about to put a lid on the money pit, I started digging into how much a stout rear end setup will be. Good lord, this thing IS as bad as an f body.

39 spline stub axles 700
companion flanges 450
axle shafts (stock) 200
short axle shafts 500
diff 125
mounts build
driveshaft 200
Total 2175

So thats why my spreadsheet looks like right now. The worst part is, If I don't jump on the stub axles that are in stock, it could be 2 months until they get another set.

Well I took the Z on a parts run today (for itself) lol.

I drove 2 hours each way for an infinity Q45 diff and axles.

Lookie what I found in a little po-dunk town where we had to stop because the GF had to use the restroom.

What are the odds?!

The car drove great, and it managed 29.2mpg rolling 80 the whole way. Not bad

Did you ever think about using a straight axle? Possibly a narrowed 9" housing. I know the IRS is nice but for long term use the straight axle would last longer. Just a thought. Early Z-car+LS= badass ride!!!

If I was going to do a live axle, I would have done it by now. The setup that I have will handle just about whatever i can throw at it. I want this car to remain a corner carver. If I was just going to tub it and do a 4 link, I wouldn't have wasted all the time and money on suspension upgrades.

I ended up using a Ford 8.8" out of a Thunderbird SC. They're IRS, come with 3.27 gears and limited slip from the factory. Just something to keep in mind for the next one

Interesting, I would like to see something like that in a Z ! Plenty of those T-bird SC in the JY's.

I ended up going with a Z31 turbo long nose diff. This is a clutch style diff with 4 bolt CV flanges. I've been slacking on this stuff for a while now, but I'll try to get some pictures up soon.

Also, my 39 spline stub axles, and companion flanges showed up.... SEXY!

I'm not sure how you ended up spending so much on your rear end set up. I pulled a diff with CV's out of an 86 ZX turbo for $89. Added a $500 power brute clutch type LSD that I already had, $400 modern motor sports companion flanges and $150 for a set of 280 stub axles to replace the weaker 240 units. My 2500# 240 already had an R200 and Ron Tyler style diff mount so it was a bolt in upgrade.

Yeah, the 39 spline stubs are stronger, but guys with 280 stubs and ZX CV's routinely run 9's. Way faster than I will ever go. If you are truely running the car that hard than pulling the stubs every season or so to inspect them isn't too much to expect.

Nice set up and all but you definitely went large with top end hardware.

I'm trying a VSLD swap in my R200 long nose ! I found a website were someone did it and it came out good so I found a local(actually around the corner) guy selling one with axles cheap. They are a 5 bolt pattern on the diff side but all I have to do is swap that 5 bolt axle end on to my z31 cv's(the diff side).

I don't like doing things twice, so I generally spend a little more the first time to ensure that I won't have to do it again.

I ended up going with a Z31 turbo diff, so i won't have to change my mounts at all, or the driveshaft.

Its not as much as I stated earlier, but still a pretty penny. HOWEVER, its still way cheaper than putting a ford 9" in a 4th gen lol

Buying the last of the rear end pieces tomorrow, and then I have to wait for my custom axles to show up.... So that will likely be another week or two. Oh well, too busy working right now to touch the car.

Here are my 4130 chrome moly 39 spline billet stub axles and companion flanges.

And since my buddy needed his welder back, and I am without a truck at the moment....
