we had the same issue with our turbo 5.0 swapped merkur xr4ti, we ended up grinding the **** out of the inside of the housing and making the guts from a 8.5" 10 bolt work inside. then had drive shaft shop make the axles. sucks when thats all that hold you back from having fun.

Driveshaft shop custom DS and axles. Billet input stubs with porsche 930 cv's. 300M bars, and 300zx NA outers (to retain 4 lug hubs) i can upgrade these to a turbo cv later for added strength if needed.

Other winter upgrades include:

LS3 oil pan (1" gain in ground clearance and baffling)
Went from a PCV system to a catch can system
Fixed numerous squeaks / rattles

Looks awesome! What oil pan were you running before? I just picked up a ls2 pan but haven't had a chance to see if it clears everything yet.

I had an F body pan on it. Picked up ~1.5" of ground clearance. Also, the improved baffling in the ls3 pan means I don't have to worry about oil starvation.

Holy man, you do some nice work. Wish I had your dedication too.

That is the first 8.8 IRS I have seen mounted in a Z car. Did you get ideas from somewhere else or is that all original?

One of my worries about Nissan diffs is the lack of a front flange that mounts anything bigger than a 1310 U joint. Looks like you have that covered.

Thanks! And who said you need a shop to do work? This was all done in a 1 car in an apartment complex.

To my knowledge, it is the first 8.8 IRS in a Z car. I had seen other cars with 8.8's, and thought "that doesn't look too hard to do". So.... I did it. I've been 110% pleased with my decision. Love having a limited slip vs the welded diff.

And yes, I have 1350 U-joints front and rear now. I have over 300 miles on it, and have only had some small issues (tires rubbing flares). Other than that, life is great!

I used to have my bottle sideways like that, but found since the pickup is in the bottom of the bottle, as the bottle got lower, it would not keep a good feed under acceleration... I would be good for about 3-4 runs on a 150 shot.

Nice job on the 8.8 install. I was the first to run a 8.8 Cobra rear with the Explorer cover in a FC RX7. DSS made the axles, and I sold about 20-30 kits. This was back in 2006-7. Sold a set-up to Enzo, who later made this pass:


Your set-up will be plenty strong.

I sure hope so! I've already broken some of the body mounts that I used though, so I'll have to beef those up.

Well I'm still waiting on a nitrous fitting that was SUPPOSED to have shipped friday. So, we'll see on the dyno (had it scheduled for today). Planning on for sure going to the track friday night though.

I had a near near death experience this last weekend, and is some good food for thought for you guys running stock fuel rails.

The quick connect that goes onto the rail, and converts to an AN fitting came off in the middle of a pull, and sprayed gas EVERYWHERE in my engine bay. Luckily, it didn't catch fire. Nothing wrong with it other than it has been taken off maybe 6-7 times. If you have one of these, NEVER take it off the rail, instead, decouple the threads.

I bought some Holley fuel rails (really nice, and only $130. I did have to re-bend two of my hard lines for the N2O however.

Looks great! The funny thing is I just rolled 5000 miles on my swap, but now I want to do a lot of basic upgrades, #1 being the fuel system lines/rails.

The Ford 8.8 IRS is really the best alternative for most high powered IRS cars. It is plentiful, relatively inexpensive, and had a ton of support in terms of various styles of differentials and gear ratio availability.

I completely agree with Project GatTagO, the 8.8" IRS is a nice piece. Its for a Mustang, so lots of aftermarket support.

It sure would be nice if there were someone offering a bolt-in setup for the 8.8s in Zs! I'm in the process of doing a 2JZ swap in mine and the rear is going to be a nightmare. I've got an R230 out of a Nissan SUV with 3.08 gears being mated up with an R230 out of a ZXTT to get the LSD. The housing for the ZXTT won't handle 3.08 gears and for my drivetrain I need the taller gears (V160 trans) so it will be pretty close to the Supra ratios. The housing is just big enough that it won't bolt in using the normal R230 kits but the diff should be even stronger than an 8.8 but it's all custom crap.

How do you like the TTT uprights? I chose not to go with them in order to keep brakes that would have a parking brake capability but axles will be an issue. Using pairs of inner ZXTT CVs work but the axle floats too much and custom stops have been made by others. I've got billet stub axles though and am hoping some other solution can be found that doesn't require the stops etc. since those don't seem reliable. In the plus side I can use Mustang brakes and get a working parking brake although one caliper will be upsdie down and must be bled off the car. <sigh>

Would really love to see more of what you did to get that rear setup correctly. I'm yanking a 383SBC\T56 combo out of my car to accommodate the 2JZ and expect it to be a big improvement as the motor put down 700+ WHP in the Supra before it was wrecked. With 1K less weight I expect I'll be turning it way down :-O The 383 was carbed and just didn't do it for me, an LS would've been way way better but when this was done the swaps were quite rare

I suspect an FD3\LSx swap will be my next project - a match made in heaven. If I didn't have the 2JZ drivetrain already it too would get the LS motor, it's got to be one sick combo and your car came out damned nice!

P.S. What did you do for a fuel tank? I've got a sumped aluminum cell now but I fear it's going to have to be scrapped to do this right. I'd like to find something in-tank and not an old ZX tank either lol.

P.P.S. for some reason I got linked to the rear stuff and didn't see the previous pages - lots of reading to do but I see you used a V6 tank - that working out well for fuel? Love what you did to clean up the engine bay, inspiration to do that myself!

Not sure where you're getting your info, but i used Z32 rear brakes, and was able to get the E Brake working just fine.

There is a link in this thread to hybridz.org about all the rear end stuff or you can go to HBZ, in the drivetrain section, the whole thread is there.

I'm using a fabricated aluminum tank as well. Its all in this thread, i promise. Its working fine right now, but I kinda wish it was sumped, rather than just having the pickup at the rear.
