I am considering a guts swap also. I've got a 77 Jeep Cherokee with 6.0/ 4L60E and posted this question on a Jeep forum, but not much replies yet. Any help with new gauge internals swap into original gauges would be some good info., as I am sure there are a lot of people out there interested in this. I know there are vendors who currently do this at a high cost, but I don't think any of them will chime in and give their secrets away. I don' think it is that complicated. It will just take time and patience.

Pretty much a trial-and-error process that is governed by the amount of room you have to work with. Early/mid 90's GM full size vans have a very compact round electric speedo with the electronics integrated.

Doesn't Classic Instruments do retro fitting? It may not be cheap, but you can keep the classic looks and feel of the old with new technology.

I just ran acrossed this post asking about a speedo motor drive set up. Well i guess it doesn't exist yet... I am a electronics guru, i think I can make one work and fairly cheap too. Ill keep you guys posted and get working on it.

Forgive us if we don't get our hopes up too high. No offence, but we've all heard that before. I've been subscribed to this thread a long time and still nothing.

I do wish you the best though, and if you do come up with something , keep us posted, you'll be the hero of this thread.

I have been watching this thread as I will be in need of a solution like this as well. However, I did see that Digital Dakota gauges has a new product that while not cheap is a good solution.

That is a good option if you want to keep stock gauges.

Agreed. Price isn't too bad either. You can fine tune it on the fly too.

A real shame this hasn't gone anywhere yet. For those that are interested, I found this kit on ebay that is 1/5th of the price of a tailshaft conversion for a 4l60e.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/700R4-Speedo-ELECTRIC-TO-MECHANICAL-CABLE-Conversion-Kit-Convert-Speedometer-/310709748767?pt=Vintage_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4857be841f&vxp=mtr
Am I missing something, is this too good to be true? It says 700r4, but this should fit, shouldn't it?

That kit is for taking the VSS out of a 700r4 and replacing it with the older cable drive set up. A 4l60e from an LS engine has a different tailshaft and you can't just replace the VSS with a gear.

We have parts that will allow adapting an older style tail-housing to the LSx 4L60-E transmissions so that you can run a mechanical speedometer.

We make the adapters in-house. We left extra material on the 6-bolt to 4-bolt adapter in case you want to drill and tap holes for mounting brackets and mounts.

We have sold these parts for years, but only recently put the pictures on our website.

For more info, see this link:

Default Dakota

Dakota says it needs input from VSS. I am looking into a 'connect and cruise' and it needs VSS for PCM and shifting. Some on forum have had problems with shift problems when sharing VSS.

I can't get Dakota to tell me if theirs will work work with speedo output from PCM.

A cable x will work from the speedo output from the PCM, so I would think this would work that way too. I've had issues tapping into the VSS directly.
