Default fuel tank welding

Any problems with welding on my gas tank? Mig welding it be ok? It hasn't had any gas in it yet! My Spectre efi tank!. If i cut it open will it need to be sealed on the inside of the welds? I doesn't look any thicker than body panel metal, and I can weld that stuff... Or would it be better to have it tig welded..?

depends on the size mig wire your running, 025 or 035 wire for sure, and your abilities as a welder/ fabricator, I would personally tig it though, alot cleaner weld.

You Can MIG it if TIG isn't available. .023 wire. Be sure to grind (sanding disc) the galv. away from the area to be welded. Tack weld it and move around just like a bodypanel.

I've MIG'd a couple tanks with good results. If you want to Eastwood makes some good tank sealer.

I have mig`ed a few tanks, just have to be sure of your welding. Mig leaves you open to having more pin holes than tig, but I usually just pressure test with compressed air and soapy water.

Hey Rick, I've MIG'd several tanks with good results. But this begs the question, why are you having to weld on a new Spectra EFI tank?

mig is not a great choice for a factory tank. if you do mig, definately follow with a braze and solder.

I had a freind here that sumped his own tank, mig welded, ground down the welds and went over it with JB weld and smoothed it to a point that it looked seamless after a black repaint. I laughed initially, but it actually turned out a pretty nice sealed up job in the end.

Well the thought was to maybe put more baffling in the tub for gas sloshing issues. U know, the ones everyone is having.. I just wanted to try it B4 I got gas in it....I hope to have my 71 running in a couple weeks....
Rick

why cover the weld with braze? I can see grinding smooth and painting...

I notched my tank for frame clearance, but before I did it I talked to a gas tank repair shop. They told me not to smooth the welds down because in the heat of summer the tank can actually split open. I welded on the edge of the tank so it may not matter if welding on the bottom or top.
