Default Carb'd LY6/4l80e into a 1968 Nova.

Hi,

I picked up a ly6 2009 Engine Chevy Truck Silverado 2500 34207KLM

I want to go carb'd for the old school look.

I'm thinking the following:
Holley Street avenger 770 or 870
Victor Junior l92 carb intake
Cam? Not sure but need to do a VVT delete for sure as going carb (LS2 timing cover and cam gear)
Since I am guessing this is a 58x I'll need a MSD 6012

I want to run a decent et but it is more of a street car. I've been reading alot of here. For example https://ls1tech.com/forums/conversio...ap-thread.html

Anyone know if the Vic Jr and carb will clear the stock hood on a Nova? I expect it is going to be close.....

I'll update things as I get moving. I expect the car back from the body man soon so want to get the engine running ASAP on the stand.

B

i have a 68 nova with a carbed 5.3 and a victor jr intake on it and running an aed 750 dubble pumper carb. i have a steel 2 inch cowl hood and run a 1 inch carb spacer and have no room for an air cleaner. with out the spacer my air cleaner rubbs the hood. as for cam im running the ***** thumper by comp cams. u will need some valve springs for this cam. has great sound and runs great too. it went a 12.20 on a bs tune the first pass off the trailer last november.

Thanks, guess I will have to expect need a cowl hood was trying to avoid it.

The more I look at things I am leaning towards the comp 277Lr HR13 277 285 227 235 .614 .621

The car already has an 8.5" 10 bolt with 4.10's c clip eliminator kit, Detroit locker and street/strip axles.

Still not sure of what tranz.... might go with a lentech as they are local.... but feel weird putting a tranz based on a ford in a Chevy.

Thanks,
Bruce

I definitely will as things progress. Suppose to get the car back from the body shop soon so as long as that does not hold me up too much. Getting a list together for all the parts I will need (Cam, valve train, headers, intake, msd 6012, timing cover with sensor and cam gear).

I have ordered the following oil pan

List so far is:
COMP Cams 13702-KIT - COMP Cams GM LS Series Retrofit Trunnion Kits
Combo, Holley, Street Avenger, Carburetor, 770 cfm, Electric Choke, Fuel Line, Red/Blue Anodized Fittings, Kit
Additional InfoAdditional Info: Drop Ship
Edelbrock 28457 - Edelbrock Victor Jr. LS1 Carbureted Intake Manifolds
MSD Ignition 6012 - MSD 6LS-2 Ignition Controllers
V.V.T. Delete Kit, 3-Bolt Cam
Heat Treated Chrome-Moly Pushrods, 7.400" (Stock length LS1) $119.99 $119.99

let me know what you decide on accessories and trans. I tossed your info onto the X-body thread. It's nice to see another '68 (and our first Chevy II!).

Thanks! I'll let you know. for tranz I am between the devil and deep blue sea on... I have 2 options for reputable shops in the area so one of them will get the job. Accessories I am leaving towards KWiK Performance (about 70% sure I'm going that way)

In Canada it is such a pain to get stuff here and shipping is not good from the US but normally out ways the price difference. The 2 options for shipping were fed-ex 251.51 or UPS ground 96.20 for the order I put in today and that is just the stuff I need to get the engine running on the stand for a trial run as the junk yard has a 90 day warranty on the engine going to test it before going in the car as it is still at the body shop.

This is the car in primer hopefully soon in paint

Thanks,
Bruce

I found this video and it makes me hopeful I can use the stock hood and keep the sleeper look.

you're likely going to need a drop-base air cleaner assy OR go with an EFI setup (such as the LS3 piece)!

the carb height on the vic jr. is 7.40". Per the eddy website:
Carb height (CH) for this manifold is measured from the valley cover flange to the carb pad.
Best be gettin' your measuring tape out for this one.

Yeah I agree a measuring tape is needed. Its going to be very close to -ve clearance with the stock hood.

I did some work on the engine getting it ready to be painted Chevy orange for the block etc. Going to leave the heads and water pump stock aluminum look to match the intake.

The engine looks clean like I would expect from a 35k ly6. My the intakes ports are huge on this

I started teh clean up on the block with the wire brush and degrease etc. got some rust neutralizer also. Going to paint it Chevy Orange when the cleanup is done.

Thanks,
Bruce

Did a lot more cleanup and then some taping and spraying. Will need to go out in a bit and start removing the tape once its setup enough.

Took the masking off. Did not turn out too bad. I let the timing cover act as its own mask as I have a new cover coming for when I remove the VVT.

Let me know how it goes what exact cam did you get?

I can't wait to get my car together and drive it but I must be patient and not rush it. I will be starting the engine on the stand once some parts arrive.

Thanks,
Bruce

Santa came today in the way of the big brown truck (UPS)

So got one of my orders.... More to come! I hope those are the correct cam gears for the 58x. I ordered both single and 3 bolt cam gears as I want to get the engine running on the stand as a test as I have a 90 day warentee on the ly6 and don't expect to get the cam in time for that.

I got the oil pan and intake installed after receiving my intake gaskets and coil to replace the broken one...

Here is a pic of how things sit now

I took a pic from the front of the engine to show how high things are. I expect I am going to need a 4" cowl hook but time will only tell.....

I need a harmonic balancer puller, the one I have won't work so I did not change the front cover yet.

I have looked at the wiring and were it goes for the msd 6012 and all looks nice and simple. All the cable appear to be the right connector so won't be long and I will have this running on the stand. Going to bot the stand to the garage floor to avoid any potential for problems.

Since this is more a street car then a race car and will need to drive a good distance to the track I decided to go with the 770 CFM carb instead of the 870 for more steetability but I know I will loose some power up to.. I'm ok with that.

After the run on the stand hopefully I can get the cam order once I make up my mind.... Order custom 227/235 comp 110+4 to pickpu so low to mid range or live with the stock specs. Also wondering about using different springs then the comp pieces with titanium retainers.

TTYL,
Bruce

Unless I'm missing something, these are not the right headers for a '68 Nova. You should be using the D3337 or D3337-R headers (the "-R" designation means raw/uncoated whereas without the "-R" they come ceramic coated).

Great progress so far. Keep it coming!

Yeah I was noticing that while going over my order list I think it was a typo. I check with the manufactures catalog it shows they are not the correct ones. I removed them form the post above and will update once I select the headers I will be using.

D3337-R will for sure work. I was going with uncoated as I read that using coated headers will reck them doing the engine breakin etc. as the coated need several heat cycles to cure correctly.
