LTX --> LSX Conversion Sticky

Tranny question...
First let me say that you guys are supergeniuses and I am completely bowing down to your experience and know how when it comes to all things fast. You guys are my exalted rulers.
Now here is my question... I have lsx dreams on a bicycle budget, lol. It has been noted that you need an ls specific t56 to bolt up to a lq or ls block, as the lt t56 has a different bellhousing, input shaft, and something else I forgot... my question is, can I just swap bellhousings, input shafts, and something else I forgot FROM an ls t56 to my current lt trans?
Forgive me if this is a stupid question, I'm a noob to all things V8. I came from the import scene - still love the cars that aren't just riced-out junk, but 98% of the people in the scene are all douchebags, so it was time for an upgrade.
Thank you in advance for your replies, they are greatly appreciated!! Hopefully with the wealth of knowledge available on this forum and the awesome people on it I'll be able to build something I can be proud of
Oh - and just out of curiosity.. what kind of mileage are you guys getting on these lq4/l92/l76 combo's with a t56? I know cam choice makes all the difference in the world, but I'm thinking mild cam on mildly ported l92's - shooting for maybe 450-ish rwhp.. 18 city 26hwy with stock gears and driving mellow too much to ask? What kind of numbers are you guys seeing?
Thanks again!!

From what I've heard, you can swap parts and run the same T56. Merv would be best to ask, he knows the T56 inside and out.
As for mileage, I don't think it would be asking too much to get 24-26 hwy with a mild cam and mellow driving habits.

To take a LT1 T56 and make it LS compatable you need to switch out the Input Shaft, Bell Housing, and the Front Plate on the Transmission.
It's very easy to un-bolt and re-bolt, to correctly do this you need to check the endplay of the Input Shaft and Counter Shaft if you swap them.

I've read in the conversion section where people used the following to run early chevy 4 speeds:
1. $60 flywheel from O'reilly's (Sachs #NFW1050)
2. LS7 Pilot Bearing #12557583
3. 1.25" Long Throw-out bearing
4. Adjustable Pivot Ball
5. 11" Clutch
6. Large Bellhousing for 168 Tooth Flywheel
This combo allowed the early transmission input shaft length to work with the LSx crankshaft flange. Now I know that items 3 - 6 wouldn't work with our LT1 T56, but I can't help but wonder if # 1 & 2 couldn't be used along with our parts to come up with a working T56 while leaving the transmission assembly stock??

I was going to give it a shot myself, but Merv has done it tons of times so he knows exactly what works. The only part I'll do myself is the nylon loom. Also, I'll be doing a MIL-spec wiring conversion, but the layout will already be done.

Man, it's just amazing how much info is available on this forum - I've been actively researching tons of threads over the last several weeks, this is definitely THE place for everything f-body, vette, ls-lt engines/tranny's... You guys are amazing!
The Merv: Okay, input shaft, bellhousing and front cover - sounds easy enough. You said that to correctly do this you have to sheck the endplay btwn the input shaft and counter shaft - can you elaborate on that at all? What should the endplay be and how do I make sure that it's correct? If it's not correct, what is the remedy? Thanks a bunch for the info though!! In your own opinion, do you think this is a viable option over just going to an LS T56? I just trying trying to keep costs down - I'm looking at about 1500 for an lq4/l92/l76 combo, and an LS T56 would cost me about the same amount - if I can make mine work with a few hundred dollars worth of parts and a couple hours of my time, I think why not, right?
1961 ba427: That sounds like a good theory, were you able to figure anything out further? Or would it just be easier to swap the above parts like the merv was saying?
97badass: M29? Uh oh! How do I make sure I don't have one of those? that would definitely be a major obstacle in my plan, lol!!
Thanks again for the help guys!!
